The ČSD series E 499.0 (from 1988: series 140 ) is an electric locomotive of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for the 3 kV direct current system in the north and east of the former Czechoslovakia .

history

140.087 in Kralupy nad Vltavou hl.n. (2010)

The locomotives were built by Škoda in Plzeň under a license, including from SLM in Winterthur . It was intended for the so-called main train of the ČSD from Chomutov to Čierna nad Tisou . Since after the completion of the prototypes at ČSD no lines with 3 kV direct current had been electrified, the two machines were given to the Polish State Railways (PKP) for testing.

After the completion of the 980-kilometer liner train, the locomotives were then used for decades on the ČSD DC network.

Since the 1980s, the locomotives have largely been replaced by the more modern 162 series. However, some of the locomotives are still used in freight train service. (As of 2010)
