The class E 499.3 (from 1988: class 163 ) is an electric locomotive of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for the 3 kV direct current system in the north and east of the former Czechoslovakia .
history
The locomotives were manufactured by Škoda in Pilsen in three series of 60 locomotives from 1984 . In terms of design, the machines are based on the two-system locomotives ES 499.1 (today class 363), but the E 499.3 only received the equipment for direct current operation.
The 1991 series locomotives were delivered with a modified gear ratio as the 162 series for a top speed of 140 km / h. The series built in 1992 was then designed for a top speed of only 120 km / h in order to have a higher tractive power available for use in freight transport. Due to financial problems, this series was initially not accepted, so 9 locomotives were sold in 1995 to the Lombard railway company Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio (FNME). The Czech Railways ČD later acquired 40 locomotives, and the remaining locomotives went to the Slovakian ŽSR (today: ZSSK ) in 1995 .
The nine locomotives delivered to Italy were acquired by the Czech railroad company RegioJet in 2010 and were returned to the Czech Republic this way. The yellow-painted locomotives have the numbers 162 112-120.
Both at the ČD and the ŽSR, the bogies of some of the 162s were later exchanged for those of the class 363 dual-system locomotive in order to increase the top speed to 140 km / h. The 162 converted in this way were redesignated as the 163 series.
From 2011, the 30 class 163 locomotives that belonged to ČD Cargo were converted into dual-system locomotives and renamed the 363.5 class . The electrical equipment was fundamentally renewed; the power control is now carried out via IGBT converters. The starting tractive effort has been raised to 300 kN and the continuous output has been increased to 3600 kW by refurbishing the traction motors, which can now be achieved in both power systems. In addition, part of the braking energy can now be fed back into the overhead line.
Since 2012, some ČD locomotives have been equipped with push-pull train controls.
A few years ago, the ZSSK began equipping several locomotives of the 162 and 163 series with multi-system equipment for 3 kV and 25 kV and an ETCS computer including an increase in the maximum speed to 160 km / h.
commitment
The locomotives are primarily used in regional traffic, but also in front of express trains. The domain of the 140 km / h class 162 is primarily the transport of Intercity and express trains on the Prague - Děčín and Prague - Ostrava routes .
The nine RegioJet locomotives run on the Praha – Havířov route together with former Austrian Eurofima wagons .
