Werner Pokorny
Werner Pokorny (* 1949 in Mosbach ) is a German sculptor .
Life
From 1971 to 1976 Pokorny studied sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with Hans Baschang , Horst Egon Kalinowski and Günter Neusel . 1974 to 1976 he also studied art history at the University of Karlsruhe and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. After graduating, Pokorny taught as an art teacher . In 1988 he spent a guest stay at the Villa Romana in Florence , from 1989 to 1990 he taught as a visiting professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. In 1989 he received a grant from the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation . From 1998 to 2013 Pokorny was Professor of General Artistic Education with a focus on sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . Pokorny is a member of the German Association of Artists and the Association of Artists of Baden-Württemberg. He ended his four-year tenure as 1st Chairman of the Artists' Association of Baden-Württemberg in 2011, but was re-elected to this position in 2012. He is also the chairman of the Wilhelmshöhe Art Association in Ettlingen. and member of the Baden-Württemberg Art Commission
He lives and works in Ettlingen .

Pokorny only uses wood or, for outdoor work, preferably Corten steel . This enables the creation of weather-resistant sculptures of any shape and size. He often uses simple, archetypal basic elements such as bowl, vase, vessel, house, rib or sphere.
"One possibility is to assume that these essential things in life always stay the same and do not change."
Hollow out or breakthroughs, the interplay of inside and outside, objectivity and abstraction characterize his entire work. When working with Corten steel, angular and hard shapes can be precisely welded. The connection with the oxidized, rusted surface creates new independent plastic forms. Pokorny has thus developed a completely independent style in which one can discover an intense tension between complexity and simplicity.
