Physics institute building on the Riedberg campus

The Riedberg campus is the natural science campus of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . It is located on the southwest slope of the Frankfurt settlement of Riedberg . The departments of Biochemistry / Chemistry / Pharmacy and Physics , large parts of the Department of Earth Sciences / Geography (with the exception of the Institute for Human Geography ) and, since 2011, the Biosciences (previously only partially) with a total of around 4,000 students are located there. In the future, the institutes of mathematics and computer science will also be located here.

The beginnings of the campus

The first university buildings at this location, then known as the Niederursel campus , were put into operation in 1972 for the chemistry department. The Biozentrum was opened around 1994 with an additional cafeteria, new lecture halls and departmental library. The postal addresses at that time were Marie-Curie-Strasse 7–9 for chemistry and Marie-Curie-Strasse 11–15 for the Biozentrum. Around 2008 the addresses were moved to the newly created Max-von-Laue-Straße.

New physics and other buildings in the first extension

With the planned closure of the Bockenheim campus , different locations were sought for the departments located in Frankfurt-Bockenheim . Since there were already two scientific institute buildings on the Riedberg, the decision was made to locate the other scientific departments there as well. In June 2005 the physics building including the institute for nuclear research was moved into on Riedberg. The geosciences and the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) were inaugurated as additional teaching buildings in 2007 . At the beginning of 2008, a university-independent company built a dormitory with around 100 rental units. To complete the first expansion, the so-called workshop building was built between physics and geosciences in 2009. In addition, two floors at the Riedbergzentrum were rented for the FIAS and for a graduate college (rented out February 1, 2014).

New Biologikum, Cluster of Excellence and Otto Stern Center

The last three extensions were jointly inaugurated on December 16, 2011. These are the Biologicum, the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (BMLS) (a research building of the Macromolecular Complexes Excellence Cluster ) and the so-called Infrastructure Center, which was named Otto Stern Center during the construction phase . The Otto Stern Center includes the scientific department library with 300,000 media, a central cafeteria and several lecture halls and seminar rooms.

More new buildings

In 2013, the research greenhouse on the Riedberg campus was completed. It is used for the cultivation, care, maintenance and presentation of plants that are made available for research and teaching in the biosciences of the Goethe University on the Riedberg campus. In the next few years, mathematics and computer science will be relocated from the Bockenheim campus to the Riedberg campus. In addition, the existing buildings of the chemistry department are to be replaced; a first phase of construction includes the new building for an internship building, for which an architectural competition was announced at the end of 2016.

Other scientific institutions

Life sciences companies and research institutes such as the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research , Max Planck Institute for Biophysics and the interdisciplinary Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies have settled in the vicinity of the university . The neighboring Frankfurt Biotechnology Innovation Center (FIZ) houses young life science companies. The second building complex for the FIZ went into operation at the end of 2008, increasing the usable area to 14,000 square meters. The main user of the new building is Merz Pharma . At the end of 2011, around 80 percent of the space available in this quarter was occupied. Another addition to the FIZ, the Campus of Elements based on US models , has been under construction since November 2011 on the southwest corner of Altenhöferallee and Riedbergallee. On a 9,200 square meter property, 16,500 square meters of rentable space in an open building complex is made available to researchers of the elements water, fire, earth and air.

The scientifically used areas belong to district 8, but together with the interlocking residential areas in district 12 form a settlement-geographic unit.

traffic

The connection of the site to public transport was quite poor until 1996. Only with the opening of the Biozentrum did a bus line run regularly to this campus. With the construction of other buildings (physics and geology), the number of bus routes to the campus rose to up to three. Up until 2005, access by motor vehicle was only possible via Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse and Marie-Curie-Strasse. The end of 2010 the station was university campus Riedberg the Frankfurt U-Bahn opened, and reduces connections by bus on two lines.

Data connections

Today every building is supplied with data connections. This was not always the case, as fiber optic cabling should actually be installed at the Biozentrum, for example . This was replaced by ACO cabling during the construction phase (in every third room). This was only changed in 2008 (FTTO with mini switch). The chemistry was equipped with twisted pair cabling around 2002 . Furthermore, the physics, geology and the workshop building as well as the student dormitory still have twisted pair cabling. All other new buildings received FTTO with a mini switch including a large-area W-LAN supply. The workplaces in the library and the lecture hall seats in the Otto Stern Center are equipped with power and data connection sockets.

Events

Main article: Night of Science

The Night of Science event has been held annually on the Riedberg campus since 2006 . It serves to get to know the campus and the natural science departments better. The event is organized and put on its feet exclusively by students. In addition to lectures, there are also many experiments, guided tours and other entertainment through z. B. Live music. As the name suggests, it is a nocturnal event. It starts traditionally at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 a.m. with breakfast together.
