The Hans-Thoma-Preis , state prize of the state of Baden-Württemberg , has been awarded every two years since 1950, since 1971, to visual artists who already have a recognized work or who can expect a further development to high achievements. You must be born in Baden-Württemberg or have a focus of your work here. The award is endowed with 25,000 euros. The prize is named after the painter Hans Thoma (1839–1924), who was born in Bernau in the Black Forest .

On the occasion of the award ceremony, which traditionally takes place in Bernau on Hans-Thoma-Tag , the second weekend in August of an odd year, an exhibition with works by the newly nominated winner will be opened at the Hans-Thoma-Kunstmuseum .

The EnBW-Förderpreis (since 2010 NaturEnergie-Förderpreis ) has been awarded at the same place, but in even years .
