Curth Georg Becker

Curth Georg Becker (born February 26, 1904 in Singen ; † December 29, 1972 there ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

life and work

Becker was born in the so-called "bay window" on the first floor of the house at Scheffelstrasse 12 as the eldest child of his parents August and Juliane, née. Courtier, born.

The family moved from Singen via Lörrach , Freiburg and Elberfeld to Moers on the Lower Rhine . Here the father died when Curth Georg was eleven years old. Due to the economic situation, Curth Georg Becker had to spend a few years in the local orphanage .

In 1924, Becker became a master student of Heinrich Nauen at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Study visits to Italy and France followed .

He was a member of the artists' associations " Rheinische Sezession " and " Das Junge Rheinland ".

During the time of National Socialism , Becker's paintings were confiscated because of his unpopular conception of art.

In 1940 he was called up for military service. In 1946 Becker returned from Soviet captivity and lived in Hemmenhofen , later in Gaienhofen . In 1954 he moved back to Singen. In the 1950s, Becker, to whose circle of friends Hans Purrmann belonged, set up a studio in Montagnola . A portrait of Purrmann was created there in 1961.

Curth Georg Becker died after a serious illness on December 29, 1972. His written estate is in the German Art Archive of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum .

1904 • Becker was born on February 26th in Singen am Hohentwiel as the eldest son of newspaper publishers August Becker and Juliane Antonie Höfling.

1910 • After the bankruptcy of the Singener Nachrichten, the family moves to Moers / Niederrhein .

1915 - 1918 • Death of his father when Curth Georg is eleven years old. Due to the economic situation, Curth Georg Becker had to spend three years in the orphanage in Moers.

1920 - 1923 • Construction trainee in Moers, attending the building trade school in Essen, then the arts and crafts school Krefeld (Campendonk district).

around 1923 • Frenchization of his first name Kurt in Curth.

1924 • Studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he was also promoted by the Rector, Walter Kaesbach.

1926 - 1928 • Master student with Heinrich Nauen , whose proximity to the art of French modernism, Rhenish expressionism and the German Henri Matisse School Becker seeks. Studio neighbor of Otto Dix and Paul Klee .

1928 - 1961 • Beginning of a lifelong close friendship with Werner Gilles . Friendships with Ferdinand Macketanz, Josef Pieper, Peter Janssen, Max Ernst, Leo Faber and Heinrich Campendonk. Member of the Junge Rheinland and the Malkasten.

1928 - 1931 • Travels to the Netherlands, to S. Angelo d´Ischia, Paris and Rome.

1929 • First summer stay on the Höri peninsula in Lake Constance.

1929 - 1930 • Becker is one of the Düsseldorf artists' group “ Das Junge Rheinland ” around Asta “Mutter” Ey. Member of the German Association of Artists and the Rhenish Secession . Study trips with Werner Gilles and Joseph Pieper to Paris and Le Brusc. First meeting in Sanary sur Mer with Hans Purrmann , whom he admires personally and artistically for life.

1933/34 • Relocation to Berlin, to the “enclave of relative freedom”. Proximity to the painter's circle Berliner Klosterstrasse. Friendship with Werner Heldt, Paul Dirkes and Gerhard Marcks.

1938 • During the National Socialist era, works were confiscated in the Düsseldorf Art Museum.

1940 • Marriage to Anneliese Jung (1910–1970).

1940 - 1945 • Soldier of the Wehrmacht, u. a. in Galicia and Ukraine.

1943 • Destruction of the Berlin apartment and a large part of the oeuvre.

1945 - 1946 • American, then French captivity.

1946 • Relocation to Hemmenhofen , 1952 to Gaienhofen ; belongs to the "circle" of " Höri artists ". Birth of daughter Angela.

1947 - 1972 • Artistic director of the Singen art exhibitions, which he expanded from a local art show to a national art exhibition.

1947 • Member of the Baden Secession

1947 - 1949 • Prints in the Lovis press in Schwenningen.

1948/49 • Curth Georg Becker and Rolf Müller-Landau get to know and appreciate each other through curatorial practice and membership in artists' associations. Member of the Palatinate Secession.

1948 - 1964 • Member of the New Darmstadt Secession.

1950 • Member of the board of the new German Artists Association and member of the New Munich Group.

1951 - 1962 • Member of the board of the Oberschwaben-Bodensee Secession (SOB).

1954 • Relocation to Singen am Hohentwiel.

1954/55 - 1973/74 • extensive art in building activities in the entire south-west of Germany.

1955 • Member of the Baden-Württemberg Artists' Association. Study trip to Ravenna and Venice.

from 1955 • Regular stays in Montagnola / Ticino, where Becker set up a second studio in the Casa Gilardi in 1958 near Hans Purrmann , in which in 1961 a portrait of Purrmann was created.

1960 - 1969 • Repeated stays in Frankfurt during the winter months.

1966 • Permanent employee of the Zurich graphic magazine Spectrum.

1972 • On December 29th, Curth Georg Becker dies in Singen after a serious illness. His written estate is in the German Art Archive of the Germanic National Museum .
