Johannes Thiel (painter)

Johannes Thiel (born September 11, 1889 in Speicher (Eifel) ; † July 31, 1962 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German graphic artist and painter .

Life

Johannes Thiel studied at the art academies in Munich and Stuttgart . After being seriously wounded as a soldier in World War I , he worked in Freiburg im Breisgau as an etcher, painter and book illustrator. Johannes Thiel achieved particular fame as an illustrator of bibliophile works and as an etcher (illustrations for Molière , Shakespeare , Cervantes, etc.), as well as an author and illustrator of children's books for the Herder and Kösel publishers . Since the 1930s he lived in Kirchzarten in the Black Forest. In his freelance work, he preferred to use watercolors and produced a variety of commissioned works for Herder Verlag. During the Second World War he worked as a war painter. After 1945 years of intensive work followed with numerous exhibitions all over Germany. In 1960 Johannes Thiel was awarded the Hans Thoma Prize of the State of Baden-Württemberg . Thiel died on July 31, 1962 in Freiburg.

He went his own way, far from the art world and dominant styles.
