Albrecht von Hancke

Albrecht von Hancke (born May 7, 1924 in Breslau ; † May 8, 2017 in Karlsruhe ) was a German painter and draftsman and professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.

Life

Von Hancke did his military service from 1941 to 1946, during which he lost his sight, and was taken prisoner of war. From 1948 to 1953 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Willi Geiger , Franz Nagel and Ernst Geitlinger . In 1963 he was appointed head of a drawing class at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and was appointed professor there in 1964. The painter, sculptor and author Herbert Wetterauer was one of his students . Von Hancke taught until his retirement. He lived in Karlsruhe ( Baden-Württemberg ).

The nude is at the center of Hanckes' work, addressing the questionable nature of human existence by emphasizing the morbid , the frailty and ugliness in the portrayal of the body.

Albrecht von Hancke was a member of the German Association of Artists .
