The Edmonton Oil Kings are a Canadian ice hockey team from Edmonton , Alberta . The team has been playing in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL) , since 2007 .

history

On March 16, 2006, the Western Hockey League announced the award of an expansion franchise , which they located in Edmonton , Alberta . The franchise was named by its new owner, Rexall Sports, after the former WCHL team Edmonton Oil Kings, whose coat of arms was also given the new franchise in a modified form. In the 2007/08 season , the Oil Kings reached fifth and penultimate place in the Central Division with 22 wins in 72 games and 55 points. In the following season they were again fifth in the Central Division, but they were able to increase by twelve points to 67 points, which the team from Alberta for the first time reached the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup . In the first round, the team failed at the later finalist Calgary Hitmen in the best-of-seven series with a sweep .
