The Nanaimo Islanders were a Canadian ice hockey team from Nanaimo , British Columbia . The team played in the 1982/83 season in one of the top three Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).
history
The Billings Bighorns from the Western Hockey League were relocated to Nanaimo, British Columbia, and renamed the Nanaimo Islanders in 1982. In their first and only season, the team reached in the 1982/83 season fifth and penultimate place in the West Division, which they missed the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup . The team coached by Réal Turcotte won only 20 of their 72 games and ended the season with a yield of 41 points, placing them eight points behind the Seattle Breakers, who were directly ahead of them and thus participating in the playoffs . After just one year, the franchise was relocated to New Westminster , British Columbia, where it then took part in the game operations of the WHL under the name New Westminster Bruins . These replaced the Bruins who had moved to Saginaw a year earlier and continued their history.
