The Calgary Centennials were a Canadian ice hockey team based in Calgary , Alberta . The team played from 1966 to 1977 in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).
history
The Calgary Centennials were founded in 1966 as the Calgary Buffaloes franchise of the Western Hockey League . After just one year, the company was renamed Centennials. Their greatest success reached the team with reaching the finals for the Ed Chynoweth Cup in the 1973/74 season, in which, however, they were subject to the Regina Pats in the best-of-seven series with a sweep . In the eleven years of its existence, the team from Alberta was able to reach the playoffs a total of seven times, and in addition to the defeat in the final in 1974, they advanced four times to the semi-finals. In addition, Calgary was 1970, 1972 and 1974 each winner of the West Division.
Following the 1976/77 season, the franchise was relocated to Billings , Montana , where it then took part in the WHL game operations under the name Billings Bighorns .
