Edgar Arnold "Ed" Patenaude (born October 17, 1949 in Williams Lake , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 442 games for the Alberta or Edmonton Oilers and Indianapolis Racers in the course of his active career between 1966 and 1978 of the World Hockey Association (WHA) on the position of right winger . In 1976 and 1978 Patenaude took part in the WHA All-Star Game .
Career
Patenaude spent his junior years between 1966 and 1970 in the previous leagues of the Western Hockey League (WHL). There the winger was initially two seasons in the service of the Moose Jaw Canucks , with whom he won the President's Cup in 1967 , before moving to the Calgary Centennials in the league for the 1968/69 season, as Moose Jaw had left the league. He also spent two years playing in Calgary, although the talent had already been selected in the fifth round of the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft in 50th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). At the end of the 1969/70 season, Patenaude made his professional debut when he made his professional debut for Pittsburgh's farm team , the Baltimore Clippers from the American Hockey League (AHL).
At the beginning of the 1970/71 season , the attacker ran for the Amarillo Wranglers in the Central Hockey League (CHL). The following year he played for the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League (IHL). Both franchises were also in cooperation with the Penguins at that time. Although the Canadian had collected 76 scorer points in 70 games in the 1971/72 season , the pens showed no interest in calling him to the NHL squad.
Then Patenaude signed for the 1972/73 season as a free agent a contract with the Alberta Oilers from the World Hockey Association (WHA), which was built as a competitive league to the NHL and going into its first season . In the franchise, which traded under the name Edmonton Oilers from the following game year , the Canadian spent a total of five seasons in the WHA. With the exception of the season 1974/75 , in which he completed only 56 missions due to injury, he always scored over 40 scorer points per season. He had his best year in the 1975/76 season , in which he scored 72 times. His 42 goals were also a career record. He was also invited to the WHA All-Star Game for the first time . Shortly before the beginning of the 1977/78 season , in which he took part in the All-Star Game for a second time, Patenaude was transferred to the Indianapolis Racers within the league together with Kevin Devine , Barry Wilkins and Claude St. Sauveur . These gave in exchange to Blair MacDonald , Mike Zuke , Dave Inkpen , the WHA transfer rights to Paul Shmyr and a third-round suffrage, which was no longer held in the 1978 WHA Amateur Draft to Edmonton. After the end of the season, the striker ended his active career at the age of 29.
