The Winnipeg Monarchs was a Canadian ice hockey team based in Winnipeg , Manitoba . The team played from 1967 to 1977 in one of the top three Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).
history
In 1967 the Winnipeg Jets were founded as a franchise of the Western Hockey League . In the first two years of their existence, the Jets reached the playoff quarter-finals and then the semi-finals twice. In 1973 the name was changed to Winnipeg Clubs , the team last played in the 1976/77 season under the name Winnipeg Monarchs . After the team missed participation in the playoffs from 1971 to 1975, it was in the playoff quarter-finals again in the last two years of its existence.
Before the 1977/78 season, the Winnipeg Monarchs were relocated to Calgary , Alberta , and renamed the Calgary Wranglers . The Wranglers filled the void left by the relocation of the Calgary Centennials to Billings , Montana .
