Career

Winkler was initially active for various teams in the Manitoba Senior Hockey League . During this time he took part in the course of the 1917/18 season with the Winnipeg Ypres in the Allan Cup , which he did not win. This was followed by engagements in the Southern Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League , before Winkler moved to the Edmonton Eskimos with play in the Western Canada Hockey League for the 1921/22 season. In his second season with the team, the goalkeeper was elected to the league's All-Star Team after winning the WCHL championship with the Edmonton Eskimos. In the final games of the Stanley Cup, the team lost to the Ottawa Senators with 0-2 wins.

In August 1924, the Canadian was transferred to the Calgary Tigers together with Emory Sparrow within the Western Canada Hockey League , in return Edmonton was financially compensated. The left catcher stayed there for two years before another transfer - this time to the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League - followed. On his NHL debut for the Rangers, in the game against the Montreal Maroons , Winkler managed a shutout . After only eight NHL games, he was given in January 1927 to the Boston Bruins . In his first season he was a Stanley Cup finalist with the Bruins, but was defeated by the Ottawa Senators. In the following season 1927/28 he completed 44 NHL games in the regular season, in which he got 15 shutouts. This was the best of the season, along with Alex Connell , who also finished 15 games without conceding a goal.

Winkler then played one season each for the Minneapolis Millers in the American Hockey Association , Seattle Eskimos in the Pacific Coast Hockey League and Boston Tigers in the Canadian-American Hockey League .
