The Allan Cup in the Hockey Hall of Fame

The Allan Cup is an ice hockey trophy awarded annually to the Canadian senior amateur champions (players over 21 years of age). The Cup was donated in 1908 by Sir H. Montagu Allan as a trophy for amateur teams, which was to replace the Stanley Cup, since from then on it could only be won by professional teams.

First of all, the Allan Cup was presented to the Victoria Hockey Club from Montréal , which was to present the trophy to the champions of their own league. Later the trophy should also be able to be won by the masters of other leagues. The Ottawa Cliffsides were the first to win the cup, the first successful challenger from another league was the team from Queen's University from Kingston .

However, the difficulties of holding such a competition on a national level in a large country like Canada soon became apparent. In 1914, on the initiative of Claude Robinson , one of the organizers of the Allan Cup, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) was founded as the national umbrella organization for amateur ice hockey. One of the first decisions of the newly founded organization was to replace the previous competition for the Allan Cup with national play-offs . In 1928, responsibility for the trophy was finally transferred in full to the CAHA. This patronage lasted until the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and the Canadian Hockey Association merged to form Hockey Canada in 1994.

Since 1984, the cup has been awarded exclusively to senior AAA amateur teams , the original trophy is now on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame , and the winner is given a replica of the cup every year.

So far, the trophy has been won by teams from all Canadian provinces and the Yukon Territory , as well as by two US teams that played in Canadian leagues. The city with the most Allan Cup wins is Thunder Bay with 10 titles including four wins for Port Arthur before joining Thunder Bay.
