The Trail Smoke Eaters were a Canadian Amateur - ice hockey team from the mining town trail in the province of British Columbia , which existed from 1926 to 1987 and in the West Kootenay League played. The team won the Allan Cup , the most important trophy in Canadian senior amateur hockey , in 1938 and 1962 . Since the winner of the Allan Cup was sent to international tournaments as the Canadian national ice hockey team until 1963 , the Smoke Eaters represented Canada at the ice hockey world championships in 1939 (world champions) and 1963 (4th place). Thus, they were the last amateur team to represent Canada as a national team. In addition, the team for Canada was sent to the 1961 Ice Hockey World Cup , where they could win the last world championship title for Canada for the next 33 years.
The Trail Smoke Eaters , subsidized by the mining company , won the Savage Cup , the ice hockey championship of the province of British Columbia 17 times , between 1927 and 1933 even seven times in a row. In addition to the former senior team, there is still a junior team of the same name, which takes part in the game operations of the British Columbia Hockey League .
