Robert David "Bobby" Kromm (born June 8, 1928 in Calgary , Alberta , † June 9, 2010 in Livonia , Michigan ) was a Canadian ice hockey player (defender) and coach , from 1975 to 1980 the Winnipeg Jets in World Hockey Association and the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League .

Career

Kromm couldn't look back on a great career as an active player. He played with the Trail Smoke Eaters in the Western International Hockey League. The club team represented Canada at the 1961 Ice Hockey World Championship . Kromm was in his last season as a player and took over the team at this tournament as a coach. Surprisingly, the team was able to win the gold medal.

He stayed in Trail for some time before joining the Seattle Totems in the Western Hockey League . The Dallas Black Hawks in the Central Hockey League were then a long-term stop in his career. In eight years he led the team five times in the finals of the Allan Cup, which the team won twice. For the 1975/76 season he also followed the call of the World Hockey Association and took over the coaching post with the Winnipeg Jets . Also at the Canada Cup 1976 he was on the coaching staff of the Canadian team.

For the 1977/78 season , the Detroit Red Wings had signed him . Under him, the Red Wings got 37 points more than last year and he was honored with the Jack Adams Award as best coach of the year . In the next two seasons he missed the playoffs with Detroit. He was replaced by Marcel Pronovost .

His son Richard Kromm also had a respectable NHL career with almost 400 games for the Calgary Flames and New York Islanders .
