Lock Martin (born February 22, 1916 in Pennsylvania , USA , † January 19, 1959 in Los Angeles County , California , USA; actually Joseph Lockard Martin junior ) was an American amateur actor .

Lock Martin had a twin brother named Donald who died in childbirth.

Martin worked in many other smaller jobs before appearing in films. At 2.31 meters tall, he was an astonishing giant, making him one of the greatest actors in history. He worked as a porter at Grauman's Chinese Theater . This made him and his greatness known in the film world. So he was proposed for the role of the robot Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still , which he got. With this role Martin became a legend, and his role as Gort is still remembered today . Martin also had a small role in The Incredible Story of Mister C. It was cut out. Otherwise, Martin only appeared in a few films, as he was only an amateur actor and so acting was not his main job.

Despite his enormous size, Martin wasn't exactly the strongest. This caused difficulties for Martin in his role as Gort . In the scenes in which Gort lifts her, Patricia Neal had to be lifted with wire ropes or replaced by a doll. Martin also hosted a children's television show in Los Angeles in the 1950s called The Gentle Giant . That's how he got the nickname The Gentle Giant .

In 1946 Lock Martin married Ethel Mae Babcock. He was married to her until his death. On January 19, 1959, Martin died in California at the age of only 42. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park .
