Lawrence Morley "Larry" Hillman (born February 5, 1937 in Kirkland Lake , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and official who played 865 games for the Detroit Red Wings , among other things, in the course of his active career between 1952 and 1976 Boston Bruins , Toronto Maple Leafs , Minnesota North Stars , Montreal Canadiens , Philadelphia Flyers , Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League and 209 more for the Cleveland Crusaders and Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association on the position of the defender denied Has. Hillman is one of the few players that both the Stanley Cup NHL and the Avco World Trophy and the WHA the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League won in their careers. After retiring, he worked briefly as a trainer and general manager in the WHA for the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Cowboys .

Career

Larry Hillman began his career as a hockey player in the Ontario Hockey Association, where he was active from 1952 to 1955 for the Windsor Spitfires and the Hamilton Tiger Cubs . During the 1954/55 season he made his debut for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League , for which he played in six regular season games and three playoff games and with which he immediately won the prestigious Stanley Cup . In the following season, the defender moved with his team in the Stanley Cup final, but where they lost to the Canadiens de Montréal . After he ran up in the 1956/57 season mainly for Detroit's farm team , the Edmonton Flyers from the Western Hockey League , he left the Michigan team and joined their league rivals Boston Bruins , for whom he spent the following three seasons in the NHL and with which he again failed in the 1957/58 season in the Stanley Cup final at Montréal.

In the summer of 1960 Hillman was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs , with whom he won the Stanley Cup four times over the next eight years. He also played regularly for their farm teams from the American Hockey League , the Springfield Indians and the Rochester Americans , where he won the Calder Cup three times with Rochester . During the 1968/69 season, the Canadian was initially on the ice for the Oakland Seals and finally the Montréal Canadiens. With the latter he won the Stanley Cup for the sixth and last time in his career. In the following years, the left-shooter played for the Philadelphia Flyers , Los Angeles Kings and Buffalo Sabers in the NHL, before moving to the competing World Hockey Association in 1973 , where he first spent two seasons for the Cleveland Crusaders and then for a year for the Winnipeg Jets ran up, where he won the Avco World Trophy with the Jets in the 1975/76 season . After this success, he ended his active career.

Even after his career as a player, Hillman remained loyal to the Winnipeg Jets after serving as general manager of the Calgary Cowboys for a year . For the 1977/78 season he took over as head coach and led her again to win the Avco World Trophy. In the course of the following season he retired from ice hockey. During the Heroes of Hockey Game held in Toronto in 2000 , the former defender for the Toronto Heroes of Hockey participated.

His older brother Floyd and younger brother Wayne are also former NHL players. Hillman's nephew Brian Savage also played in the NHL for a long time.
