Barry Kenneth Long (born January 3, 1949 in Brantford , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout , who played 285 games for the Los Angeles Kings , Detroit Red Wings and, among others, during his playing career between 1966 and 1981 Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League (NHL) and 430 other games for the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association (WHA) on the position of defender . In the service of the Winnipeg Jets, whose team captain and later was also head coach Long, he won the Avco World Trophy of the WHA as a player in 1978 and 1979 . In addition to his coaching work in Winnipeg, Long was employed after his career as a scout for the Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks .

Career

Long spent his time with the juniors between 1966 and 1968 with the Moose Jaw Canucks in the previous leagues of the Western Hockey League (WHL). With the Canucks, the defender won the President's Cup , the league 's championship trophy, at the end of the 1966/67 season . After Long had proven his skills on the offensive and defensive in his second season, he was signed by the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Canadian did not succeed after his move to the professional field, however, to earn a place in the Black Hawks' NHL squad. Instead, he spent the next four seasons on their farm teams . First he played three years with the Dallas Black Hawks in the Central Hockey League (CHL), then another year with the Portland Buckaroos in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Without having played a single game for Chicago during this period, the defender moved to the Los Angeles Kings in June 1972 by means of the intra-league draft . There he managed to stand on the ice with the beginning of the 1972/73 season in the NHL. Long spent two years with the Californians, where he took on a minor role with primarily defensive duties.

In the summer of 1974, the defensive player decided to leave the NHL and switch to the World Hockey Association (WHA), which was competing with the NHL at the time. There he signed a contract with the Edmonton Oilers , who had already secured his WHA transfer rights in the WHA General Player Draft two years earlier . Long played far more offensively at the Oilers. In his first year in the league, he scored 20 goals and collected a total of 60 points scorer , making it into the WHA Second All-Star Team . After another season with 42 points, the offensive defender was transferred to the ambitious Winnipeg Jets shortly after the start of the 1976/77 season from the Oilers . There he stayed until the end of the 1978/79 season , as a result of which the league was dissolved. Until then he had in 1978 and 1979, twice the Avco World Trophy won with the Jets in 1978 for the second time received a nomination for the WHA Second All-Star Team, and between 1978 and 1979 the injured Lars-Erik Sjoberg successful as a captain of Representing franchises .

Due to the dissolution of the WHA and the inclusion of the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL for the 1979/80 season , a conflict of interests arose between the Jets and the Detroit Red Wings , which Longs shared NHL transfer rights as early as January 1978 , in the run-up to the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft with a third-round suffrage in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft in exchange for Danny Grant from the Los Angeles Kings. The Red Wings invoked their prerogative and demanded the services of the Canadian, with which he ran up for Detroit in the 1979/80 season. After a year in Detroit, Long was sold back to the Jets in late October 1980. There he ended his active career shortly after the start of the 1981/82 season at the age of 32 due to persistent injury problems.

Long had already started working for the Winnipeg Jets franchise during his last professional season due to his protracted injury. He initially worked as a scout before he was accepted into the coaching staff as an assistant coach in the 1982/83 season . During the 1983/84 season he succeeded Tom Watt as head coach and led the team into the playoffs. The qualification succeeded with 43 wins and 96 points in the following game year, in which Winnipeg advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time. During a weak 1985/86 season with only 19 wins from the first 66 games, Long was replaced by John Ferguson during the season.

Long then paused for several years and returned to the ice hockey business for the 1993/94 season as a scout for the Ottawa Senators . He was there for three years until the summer of 1996. From the beginning of the 1997/98 season until 2006 he worked in the same position for the San Jose Sharks . In the meantime, after a break of more than 15 years in the 2002/03 season, he also worked there as assistant coach for the Cleveland Barons farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL).

International

For his home country Long played with the Canadian national team in the 1981 World Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden . He scored one goal in seven tournament games. At the end of the tournament, the Canadians placed fourth outside the medal ranks. At the Summit Series in 1974 , the defender was part of Canada's expanded squad, but was ultimately not considered for the final tournament squad.
