Troy Norman Murray (born July 31, 1962 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played, among others, xxx games for the Chicago Blackhawks , Winnipeg Jets , Ottawa Senators , Pittsburgh Penguins and Colorado Avalanche in the course of his active career between 1978 and 1997 in the National Hockey League in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Murray, who received the 1986 Frank J. Selke Trophy for the NHL's best defensive striker, celebrated his greatest career success with the Colorado Avalanche by winning the Stanley Cup in 1996 .

Career

Murray played during his junior years for the St. Albert Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and made a quick detour to the Lethbridge Broncos in the Western Hockey League . In the 1980 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League in the third round as 57th. After the draft, he moved to the University of North Dakota and played there with numerous later NHL players in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . At the turn of the year 1980/81 he led the Canadian junior national team as team captain to win the world championship. At the end of the 1981/82 season , the Black Hawks used him in seven playoff games, in which he scored a goal.

In the following 1982/83 season he was finally in the squad of the NHL team, but the success went to his head and he was often to be found in Chicago's nightlife. During this time Tony Esposito , the goalkeeper of the Hawks , showed him the right way. His best season he played 1985/86 season when he was the second best scorer in Chicago with 45 goals and 99 points behind Denis Savard . This is particularly impressive as he was also awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive attacker this season .

After nine years in Chicago, he moved to the Winnipeg Jets for the 1991/92 season . There he became team captain, but after a year and a half he returned to the Blackhawks. During this phase of his career, club changes were frequent for him. During the 1993/94 season he moved to the Ottawa Senators . A season later, the Senators gave him to the Pittsburgh Penguins . In return, Martin Straka came to Ottawa. He only played 13 games for the Penguins. For his last season in 1995/96 , he moved to the Colorado Avalanche . This was a good decision because there he was able to win the Stanley Cup with the team from Québec . He played one more season with the Chicago Wolves in the International Hockey League before finally ending his career.
