In addition, he stood in 1999 with the Buffalo Sabers and 2006 with the Edmonton Oilers in the finals of the Stanley Cup .
Career
Michael Peca began his career in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League and played there until 1994. In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the second round at position 40. In the 1993/94 season he completed four games in the National Hockey League for Vancouver before he completely joined the team in 1994. But in the summer of 1995 Peca was transferred to the Buffalo Sabers , where he was able to assert himself immediately.
In the summer of 1997 he was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy , which the striker with the best defensive qualities receives and a few months later he was named team captain of the Sabers. In 1999 he made it to a Stanley Cup final for the first time , but the team had to admit defeat to the Dallas Stars .
His tenure as captain ended in 2000 when he refused to speak to Sabers management about an incident involving a planned player engagement. According to the Buffalo News newspaper , the non-contracted player Adrian Aucoin wanted to decide to sign a contract with the Sabers. Peca is said to have spoken negatively to Aucoin about the team and management, so that Aucoin signed a contract in Chicago. Peca was not used for the entire season and was transferred to the New York Islanders after the season .
When he arrived in New York, he was immediately appointed captain. After missing the playoffs seven times in a row , the team made it to the first round under the leadership of Peca in 2002. He himself received his second Frank J. Selke Trophy after the season. In the same year he won the gold medal with the Canadian national team as assistant captain at the Olympic Winter Games .
In 2003 and 2004 the Islanders reached the playoffs again, but it was always over after the first round. After the loss of the 2004/05 NHL season because of the lockout , Peca was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers . He suffered several minor injuries in the 2005/06 season , but he was able to secure the last playoff place with the Oilers. Starting as an absolute underdog, they threw out the dominant team of the regular season, the Detroit Red Wings , in the first round . The Oilers fought their way round to round and eventually reached the final of the Stanley Cup. Michael Peca's second participation in the finals turned out to be a real crime thriller. Goalkeeper Dwayne Roloson was injured in the first game and after four games the Carolina Hurricanes were leading 3-1 and only needed one win. But the Oilers were able to decide the following two games for themselves, so it came to the playoff, but where Carolina was a bit better and finally won the Stanley Cup.
His contract expired in the summer of 2006 and he decided to move to his home country. The 2006/07 season he contests for the Toronto Maple Leafs . He played 35 games, scored 15 points and was one of the most important players when the Maple Leafs were outnumbered until he sustained a serious knee injury in the game against the Chicago Blackhawks on December 22, 2006 and was out for the rest of the season. Peca's contract was not renewed and in August 2007 he signed a two-year contract with Columbus Blue Jackets . This was also not extended after the expiry in summer 2009, whereupon the Canadian initially did not find a new team. On January 19, 2010, he finally announced his retirement from active sports.
