Toni Petteri Lydman (born September 25, 1977 in Lahti ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played 902 games for the Calgary Flames , Buffalo Sabers and Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League in the course of his active career between 1995 and 2013 of the defense attorney has denied. Lydman celebrated numerous successes in international tournaments with the Finnish national team in particular and was inducted into the Finnish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016 .

Career

Lydman comes from the offspring of the Finnish ice hockey club Reipas Lahti , for whom he played in various junior teams. He was selected at the NHL Entry Draft 1996 by those responsible for the Calgary Flames in the fourth round as a total of 89, but played four more years in the Finnish SM-liiga for Tappara Tampere and Helsingfors IFK in Helsinki . In the 2000/01 season he made his NHL debut for the Flames after he came to Canada with the recommendation of winning the Pekka Rautakallio trophy as the best defender in the Finnish league.

The defender had his best season in the Flames jersey in the 2001/02 season when he scored six goals and 22 assists . In the following season he was the Flames defender with the highest points with 26 points and remained injury-free throughout the season, so that he only missed one game due to a cold. The Calgary Flames reached the 2004 Stanley Cup playoff finals , but Lydman missed a large portion of the playoff games due to injury. During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , the defender returned to Helsinki for HIFK in late January 2005, but could only be used in eight games. After returning to Calgary, he was transferred on August 25, 2005 from the Flames to the Buffalo Sabers , who received a third-round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft . On July 1, 2010, he signed a three-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks .

With the Californians he formed a defensive duo with Ľubomír Višňovský in his debut season and while Višňovský took over the offensive part, Lydman convinced with a plus / minus value of +32. This meant the second best record in franchise history together with Ryan Getzlaf , who had achieved the same value in the 2007/08 season . The team-internal record was still held by Paul Kariya with +36 from the 1996/97 season . After his contract expired in the summer of 2013, the Finn ended his active career at the age of 36. In 2016, Lydman became the 238th person to be inducted into the Finnish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .

International

Toni Lydman represented his home country in the junior division at the U18 European Junior Championships in 1995 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 1996 and 1997 . At the European Championships, the defender celebrated winning the gold medal.

From 1998 Lydman was a member of the Finnish national team , for which he completed the World Championships in 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2002 and 2003 . He also played for Finland at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey , the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics . As part of the world championship tournaments, the defender won two silver and one bronze medal. Furthermore, he was able to win a silver and a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics and also finished the World Cup in second place.
