Anthony Craig Rivet (born September 13, 1974 in North Bay , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender played over 900 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Canadiens de Montréal . He also ran for the San Jose Sharks , Buffalo Sabers and Columbus Blue Jackets , where he led the Sabers as captain . With the Canadian national team Rivet won the gold medal at the 2003 World Cup .
Career
Rivet first played from the 1991/92 season with the Kingston Frontenacs in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). After his first year he was selected in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Canadiens de Montréal in the third round in 68th position. He stayed with the Frontenacs for two more seasons and scored 164 points in three seasons. After leaving in the playoffs in the 1993/94 season with the Frontenacs, he played four games for the following Fredericton Canadiens , the AHL - farm team of the Montreal Canadiens.
At the beginning of the 1994/95 season , the Canadian was a permanent member of the farm team. With 32 points in 78 games, he was one of the pillars of the team and was therefore given five opportunities to prove himself in the National Hockey League with the Canadiens de Montréal. Also in the following two seasons Rivet commuted between the AHL and the NHL team, with his stakes increased in the NHL and decreased in the AHL. The 1997/98 season was the first season of his career that he spent entirely with the Canadiens' NHL team. The next six seasons Rivet also played in Montréal and developed into one of the top performers on the defensive, although he had to suspend large parts of the 2000/01 season because of a shoulder injury and only played 26 games.
During the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season , he signed in January 2005 a contract with the Finnish SM liiga club TPS Turku . There he played 18 season and six playoff games.
After the lockout, Rivet returned to Montréal in the summer of 2005. It was followed by his best NHL season with a total of 34 points. In addition to his career record in the points category, he also set records in the areas of assists and power play goals. In the 2006/07 season , Rivet went into the final year of his contract in Montréal. After a dispute with coach Guy Carbonneau in January 2007, the Canadiens did not expect a contract extension and gave him on February 25, 2007 together with a five-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft to the San Jose Sharks . In return, Josh Gorges and a first-round suffrage in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft moved to the Canadiens de Montréal. In June the free agent signed a new four-year contract with the Sharks. For long periods of the 2007/08 season , after Scott Hannan's departure during the summer break , Rivet was considered the team's best defensive and offensive defender, which meant that he was often used in power play situations and had the best season of his career in terms of points. It was not until Brian Campbell was signed in February 2008 that the Canadian was able to concentrate more on the defensive again. After some changes in the course of the summer break in the defensive area of the Sharks Rivet was given a seven-round draft pick for two second-round draft picks in the NHL Entry Draft in 2009 and 2010 to the Buffalo Sabers .
Rivet was able to integrate quickly into the team of the Sabers and was appointed team captain shortly before the start of the 2008/09 season . In February 2011, the Sabers put him on the waiver list , from which the Columbus Blue Jackets selected him.
In October 2011 Rivet signed a contract with the Elmira Jackals from the ECHL and let his career end there. After the 2011/12 season, he officially declared his active career over.
International
Rivet represented his native Canada at the 2003 World Cup in Finland and won the gold medal after beating Sweden in the final . In nine tournament games, the defender contributed one assist and spent six minutes in the penalty box.
