Joshua Daniel "Josh" Gorges (born August 14, 1984 in Kelowna , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 851 games for the San Jose Sharks , Canadiens de Montréal and Buffalo Sabers between 2000 and 2018 has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender .
Career
Gorges began his junior career in his hometown in the Western Hockey League with the Kelowna Rockets in 2000. There he remained until the end of the 2003/04 season , although the San Jose Sharks had already signed him in September 2002. Gorges, who had never been drafted , improved his statistics from year to year. In his last season he led the Rockets as team captain to victory in the Memorial Cup and was awarded the George Parsons Trophy for the fairest athletic player in the Memorial Cup tournament. The year before, the club had already won the President's Cup as champions of the WHL. During the last season in Kelowna, the Canadian was called up to the U20 national team of the Canadian Association to compete with Team Canada at the Junior World Championships in Finland . After a narrow defeat in the final, Gorges returned with a silver medal in their luggage.
At the beginning of the 2004/05 season he moved to the Cleveland Barons , the then farm team of the San Jose Sharks, in the American Hockey League (AHL). An appointment to the NHL team was not made because the entire NHL season was canceled due to the lockout . It was not until the 2005/06 season that Gorges was in the Sharks squad for the first time and played 49 games in the regular season and eleven in the playoffs. In the meantime, he also played in the AHL again. Also for the 2006/07 season , Gorges received a place in the Sharks squad again despite great competition. On February 25, 2007, he and a first-round suffrage in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft was transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal . In return, Craig Rivet and a five-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft came to San Jose. Gorges initially found a place in the squad of the traditional Canadiens, before he was rarely used after the summer break at the beginning of the 2007/08 season . However, the situation became relative over the course of the season.
Following the 2013/14 season, the Canadiens forced a change in the defender, who rejected some franchises , such as the Toronto Maple Leafs . Finally, the Canadiens gave him in July 2014 in exchange for a second-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft to the Buffalo Sabers . The Canadian was active with the Sabers until the end of the 2017/18 season when his expiring contract was not extended. In January 2019, the Canadian announced his retirement from active sports at the age of 34.
