NHL Entry Draft
|
The 2007 NHL Entry Draft was held from 22. bis 23. June 2007 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus , Ohio instead. The first round of drafts was held on Friday evening, June 22nd, and rounds two through seven followed on Saturday.
Draft order
The draft order for positions 1 to 14 was determined on April 10, 2007 by the draft lottery. The 14 teams that did not qualify for the playoffs take part in this weighted lottery and are placed in the reverse order of the regular season table. The worst team of the past season ( Philadelphia Flyers ) was in first place and had a 25% chance of winning the lottery and the best of the 14 teams not qualified for the playoffs ( Colorado Avalanche ) was in 14th place and had a 0.5% chance. The lottery winner moves up four places in the draft order.
The Chicago Blackhawks won the lottery, moving from fifth to first position in the draft order.
The draft order of the 16 playoff participants was only determined after the Stanley Cup final . The Stanley Cup winner was placed on position 30, the final opponent on position 29. The teams that failed in the Conference Finals were sorted into positions 27 and 28. The remaining teams were set based on their standings in the regular season. The rule is that the team with the fewest points is in 15th position. The draft order applies to all seven rounds of the Entry Draft. Teams can acquire draft picks from other teams via transfers, but they can also have given their own to other teams. The Nashville Predators gave their first-round draft pick (position 23) in a transfer deal to the Philadelphia Flyers , but received it back a few days before the draft in the course of another transfer. A few hours before the start of the entry draft, there was a transfer relating to the first round. The San Jose Sharks received a first-round draft pick (position 13) and a second-round draft pick and a fourth-round draft pick for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft from the Toronto Maple Leafs for goalkeeper Vesa Toskala and striker Mark Bell .
Draft result
In total, the 30 franchises secured the rights to 211 players, including 102 Canadians, 63 Americans, who achieved the largest share in the history of the draft with a share of almost 30 percent, 17 Swedes, nine Russians, four Finns and four Germans , three Slovaks, two Swiss, as well as a Dane and for the second time in NHL history a Nigerian.
