Brett MacLean (born December 24, 1988 in London , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played a total of 18 games for the Phoenix Coyotes and the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League between 2010 and 2011 . In 2012, at the age of 23, he had to end his career due to a heart defect.

Career

Brett MacLean was selected in the 2004 Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the first round in eleventh place overall by the Erie Otters . MacLean then moved to the Canadian Junior League at the age of 15 and completed 68 games for the Otters in the 2004/05 OHL season , achieving 23 points scorer . In the following season the striker was transferred to league rivals Oshawa Generals after 13 games for the Erie Otters together with Eric Regan and two two-round draft picks for the OHL Priority Selection in 2006 and 2007 , the Otters received the players Adam Berti and Bret Nasby in return .

In the following two and a half seasons, the right-shooter developed into a strong offensive player for the Generals. In the 2006/07 season he was the team's second best scorer behind John Tavares , and in the following season he was the best scorer of his team with 61 goals and a total of 119 scorer points in 61 completed games, as well as the second most successful scorer in the entire Ontario Hockey League. In the play-offs of this season he also scored 16 points in 15 games before the Generals were defeated by the Belleville Bulls in the conference final .

At the NHL Entry Draft 2007 MacLean was selected in the second round in a total of 32nd position by the Phoenix Coyotes , with whom he signed an entry contract on April 28, 2008 . A little later he was sent by the Coyotes to their farm team San Antonio Rampage in the American Hockey League (AHL). In the following three seasons he came on 13 missions for the Coyotes in the National Hockey League (NHL), the rest of the time he spent with the Rampage in the AHL. The winger made good offensive performances during this period, but missed the AHL play-offs with his team every year.

In July 2011, MacLean signed a new one-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes. On October 5, 2011, he was signed off the Winnipeg Jets waiver list . After five appearances for his new team in the National Hockey League, in which he scored two assists , he was again placed on the waiver, from where he was again signed by the Phoenix Coyotes and to their new AHL farm team, the Portland Pirates , was sent.

On July 2, 2012, Brett MacLean suffered a heart attack while playing an ice hockey game in Owen Sound . After an immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation , MacLean was admitted to a local hospital. He was then flown into the intensive care unit of the University Hospital of the University of Western Ontario in London in the province of Ontario . As a result, Brett MacLean had to end his playing career at the age of 23.
