Lorenzo Flennoy

Lorenzo Flennoy ( June 1910 - October 1971 ) was an American pianist of jump blues and rhythm & blues .

Flennoy, who was a childhood friend of Marshall Royal , began his music career in 1931 with Charlie Ebols & His Ebony Serenaders. He was active on the west coast of the United States in the 1940s, particularly with his trio in the music scene on Central Avenue in Los Angeles . In the early 1940s he also led a big band there at Club Alabam. a. Teddy Buckner was a member. He made his debut single in 1944 on the Armed Forces Radio Service label and on Jubilee Records . The following year Melodisc released two singles , which he recorded with guitarist Jimmy Edwards and singer Dan Grissom ( My Honey Chile and the Induction Blues ). At the end of 1945 he received a recording contract with Excelsior and took seven more records by 1947. In 1946, his music was widely recognized by Billboard , which compared him to the Nat Cole trio.

Singer Big Joe Turner took part in his last record session ( Did You Ever Love a Woman ). Flennoy also played with Jack McVea , Don Byas , Chico Hamilton , Bill Douglass , Buddy Collette , Charles Mingus and accompanied the singer Mabel Scott around 1945 . In the 1950s he worked primarily as a nightclub organist in Los Angeles.
