Brett McLean (born August 14, 1978 in Comox , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played 393 games for the Chicago Blackhawks , Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers in the course of his playing career between 1994 and 2017 National Hockey League has contested on the position of the center . He also played in Europe for SC Bern and HC Lugano in the Swiss National League A and EHC Linz in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League .
Career
Brett McLean began his career as a hockey player in the Western Hockey League , in which he was active from 1994 to 1995 for the Tacoma Rockets and from 1995 to 1999 for the Kelowna Rockets after the franchise was relocated. During this time, the center was selected in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in the ninth round as a total of 242nd player by the Dallas Stars . In September 1999, McLean was hired by the Calgary Flames as a free agent , but in the following season he only played for their farm team , the Saint John Flames , from the American Hockey League . After one season each with the Cleveland Lumberjacks from the International Hockey League and the Houston Eros from the AHL, the Canadian was signed on July 23, 2002 by the Chicago Blackhawks from the National Hockey League as a free agent.
After he had missed only four regular season games with the Blackhawks in the 2003/04 season , McLean bridged the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season at Malmö IF from the Swedish Elitserien . After resumption of play in the NHL McLean signed a contract with the Colorado Avalanche , for which he was the following two seasons on the ice. On July 1, 2007, the attacker was signed by the Florida Panthers , who gave him a three-year contract. In the 2007/08 season he scored 37 points scorer, while he only got 19 points in the following season. So the Panthers bought him out of his current contract. In September 2009, he took part in a Tampa Bay Lightning training camp , but was not given a contract.
In October 2009 he was signed by SC Bern from the National League A and won the Swiss championship with the Bernese in the 2009/10 season . On July 1, 2011, he signed a two-way contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, but was subsequently used exclusively with the Rockford IceHogs . In January 2012 he returned to the NLA and was signed by HC Lugano .
There McLean was assistant captain for the next three years and led Team Canada at the Spengler Cup 2013 and 2014 as an "assistant". In total, he played 286 games in the NLA by 2015, in which he scored 80 goals and 126 assists. After two years at EHC Linz in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League , he ended his career in 2017 and became assistant coach at Iowa Wild in the AHL.
International
For his home country, McLean took part with the Canadian U20 national team at the 1998 Junior World Cup in Finland . The striker was used in all seven American tournament games and scored two points. The Canadians finished the tournament outside of the medal ranks in eighth place.
