The Jauken is a rugged, elongated mountain range in the Gailtal Alps in the west of Carinthia with five peaks between 2110 and 2276  m above sea level. A. ( Torkofel ).

The 8 to 10 km wide limestone is part of an east-west running mountain chain between the Drautal in the north and the Gailtal in the south. It stands exactly in the middle between the two towns of the same name Dellach in the Drau and Gail valley , which are 10 km apart as the crow flies. The adjacent Reisskofel ( 2371  m ) has similar dimensions to the Jauken , but the two limestone blocks are separated from each other by the Jaukensattel ( 1613  m ) and the Ochsen Gorge, which drains to the north .

Five peaks are lined up on the ridge: from west to east Jaukenhöhe (2234 and 2110 m), Torkofel (2276 m) with the summit cross , Mitterkofel (2247 m) and Spitzkofel (2223 m). To the east the massif plunges down to the Jaukensattel, while to the west it sinks more slowly and ends in the form of wooded heights of 1600 to 1900 m to the Gailbergsattel (981 m).

It is named after the relatively evenly sloping southern flank of the Jauken with the Jaukenalm (1900 m), via which you can get from the Gailtal to the highest peak, the Torkofel . Jauk is the Carinthian expression for the alpine foehn blowing from the south (Slovenian Jug ) . Above the village of Dellach lies the Gurina plateau , which has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. The north flank, on the other hand, is strongly structured and interspersed with rock spurs , and a 3 km long block slope runs from the cirque des Torkofels through the pouring ditch (sic!) Into the Drau valley towards Dellach .

In the further course of the mountain range, to the east (beyond the Jaukensattels), the rugged Reisskofel (2371 m), the local mountain of the holiday area around the Weissensee, connects .
