The Reisskofel is at a height of 2371  m above sea level. A. the highest mountain in the Reisskofel Group , which forms the middle section of the 120 km long Gailtal Alps in western Carinthia .

The very rugged massif covers about 30 km² and slopes steeply on all sides. The central mountain range consists mainly of reef limestone and dolomite . Its northern flank is strongly fissured and has numerous rock spurs that extend from the main ridge up to 2 km far and 1200 m lower in the direction of the Drautal . The south side facing the Gailtal (see picture) is hardly less steep, but more evenly inclined; beneath their rocks, long piles of rubble and blocks stretch down into the valley.

The ascent is possible on three routes:

  1. From the north ( Greifenburg or Berg im Drautal ) over the Comptonhütte ( 1585  m ) and the Padiaursteig to Törl ( 2019  m ) on the Kleiner Reisskofel, then up the ridge to the summit cross
  2. From the south ( Reisach or Treßdorf im Gailtal ) over the Wurzenalm or Jochalm and steeply up to the Alplspitz and the south ridge
  3. From the east or west over the Gailtaler Höhenweg along the main ridge: west over the Jauken ( 2275  m ), east over the Sattelnock ( 2033  m ).

On the western flank there is the Reisskofel bivouac box at 1800  m . It can be reached from the summit in 1 to 1.5 hours, from the Jaukensattel in half the time.

The strong earthquake in the winter of 1348 triggered a major landslide on the south face - as well as on the Dobratsch . His traces can still be seen on rockfall masses in the Gailtal and on some block heaps.
