The Gailtaler Höhenweg is an approx. 150 kilometer long, partly high alpine hiking trail in the Gailtal Alps (southwestern Carinthia ). The East Tyrolean section through the Lienz Dolomites is usually not included.

description

Similar to the Karnische Höhenweg , which runs parallel to and south of the Gail , the Gailtaler Höhenweg offers the opportunity to stay on the main ridge of the mountains (about 2,000 to 2,300  m above sea level ) or via one of the alpine pastures into one of the high valleys and to descend to the rivers Drava (in the north) or Gail (in the south).

The hiking trail crosses the entire Gailtal Alpine chain for about 100 km as the crow flies, but is only a real high-altitude trail in the western part. The eastern half is divided by valleys, so that climbing individual peaks predominates here.

The western part affects all of the higher mountain ranges, but only leads to the more easily accessible peaks. Its two highest points (also in terms of visibility) are the Jauken with 2276  m and the Reisskofel with 2371  m above sea level. A. Is left out u. a. the extremely rugged Spitzkofel ( 2223  m ), while the Reisskofel opens up an insured path and on the other hand the Sattelnock ( 2033  m ) in the east near Weißbriach enables an easy start of the trail. Accommodation is available in some mountain huts in high valleys, possibly on alpine pastures that are managed in summer and west of the Reisskofel in the Reisskofel Bivouac Box .

course

The high trail can be walked in both directions. The routes are - starting at the border East Tyrol / Carinthia:

  • in the western part: Marchgraben - Auf der Mussen - Röten - Gailbergsattel - Kötschacher Ochsenalm - Jukbichl (1,889 m) - Dellacher Alm (1,667 m) - Jauken (up to 2,276 m) - Jaukensattel - Reisskofel bivouac box - Reisskofelock (insured) - Köfeletörl - Weißbriach or Kreuzbergsattel .
  • the eastern part is less busy and interrupted by a few valleys. It passes in several variants either south or north of the Weißensee (at 930 m the highest bathing lake in the Alps).
    • In the south over the Golz (2,004 m) and the Radniger Sattel (1,558 m) to the Spitzegel (2,119 m). From there either descent to Lake Pressegger See or further on the ridge of the Graslitzen (2,044 m) to Windischen Höhe (1,110 m). A continuation over the Kabesnock (1,820 m) or, more popularly, over the Dobratsch (2,166 m, nature reserve) with a descent to Villach is possible.
    • In the north of the Weißensee the path leads via Latschur (2,236 m) and Hohe Staff (2,217 m) to Goldeck (2,142 m), from there descent to Spittal an der Drau or descent with the cable car . Geologically, the Goldeck stands out from the rest of the Gailtal Alps due to its crystalline rock.
