The Johnstown Chiefs were an American ice hockey team from Johnstown , Pennsylvania that played in the ECHL , a North American minor league , from 1988 to 2010 .

history

Originally, the team owners wanted to build on the tradition of the Johnstown Jets , which were active in various leagues from 1950 to 1977, but the owners of the rights to the jets were not ready to cede them. For this reason, the team owners organized a vote among their own fans, who chose the name Johnstown Chiefs in reference to the fictional team of Charlestown Chiefs from the film " Slap Shot ", which was shot in Johnstown. Initially, the Johnstown Chiefs played in their premiere season in the All-American Hockey League , but moved to the East Coast Hockey League for the following season , in which they were one of five founding members.

During their time in the ECHL, the Johnstown Chiefs became a fixture and were ultimately the team that had been active in the same city for the longest under the same name before they moved to Greenville , South Carolina after the 2009/10 season , relocated and renamed Greenville Road Warriors .
