John Tripp (born May 4, 1977 in Kingston , Ontario ) is a German - Canadian ice hockey coach and former player. He was the head coach of the Braehead Clan in the British Elite Ice Hockey League until March 2018 .
Career stations as a player included the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League . He was also a German national player .
In Germany he was known for his long playing time in the DEL for various clubs, the longest he was active for the Kölner Haie .
Career
At the beginning of his professional career, John Tripp played three years in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Oshawa Generals . During the 1995 NHL Entry Draft , the winger was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the third round in a total of 77th position. Since the Avalanche did not make use of their rights, Tripp stood two years later again for election and was drawn in 42nd place by the Calgary Flames , for which he also never played a game. In 1997 the Canadian won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Oshawa Generals as the winner of the OHL play-offs . From 1997 to 2002, the right-shooter played in the three North American minor leagues American Hockey League , International Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League for a total of nine different teams. It was not until the 2002/03 season that he received appearances in the top division of the National Hockey League for the New York Rangers .
There John Tripp completed nine games in which he scored three points and had a plus / minus statistic of +1. Those in charge of the Rangers, however, mainly used the Canadian with the Hartford Wolf Pack , their farm team at the time , in the AHL and handed him over to the Los Angeles Kings for the following season . After he was also unable to assert himself here and was also often used in the AHL, the attacker signed a contract with Adler Mannheim in the German Ice Hockey League for the 2004/05 season , where he played a total of two years.
Since John Tripp has German ancestors, he received a German passport in 2006. Since then he has not filled a foreign position in the DEL and is also eligible to play for the German national team. Since the Mannheimer Adler restructured their team in the summer of 2006 and Tripp no longer played a role in the club's planning, he switched to league competitor ERC Ingolstadt . The native Canadian showed good performances in the panthers and thus attracted the interest of the Hamburg Freezers , who transferred him to the Elbe in the 2007/08 season .
In October 2010 he signed a contract with the Kölner Haien, which ran until 2011, after training with the Hannover Scorpions at the beginning of the season and having played six DEL games. Tripp played for the Haie until the end of the 2014/15 season and was captain between 2011 and 2015.
On September 8, 2015, the ice pirates Crimmitschau from the DEL2 announced the temporary commitment of the German-Canadian attacker. In the end, he completed 45 DEL2 games for the club and temporarily acted as the team's assistant coach after breaking a toe. After the 2015/16 season, he ended his career as a player.
International
From 2007 John Tripp belonged to the German national team , with which he took part in the World Cup in Russia in the same year . There the striker was able to secure relegation with the German team and barely missed the quarter-finals. The right-handed shooter completed six games in which he was able to score three points and a plus / minus statistic of −1. A year later, the former national coach Uwe Krupp nominated him again for the team that took part in the 2008 World Cup in Canada. Tripp completed a total of 110 international matches for Germany and took part in six World Cup tournaments and the 2010 Olympic Games. His greatest success in the national jersey was reaching the semi-finals at the 2010 World Cup .
social commitment
In addition to his work as a professional ice hockey player, John Tripp is committed to many charitable causes. Some time ago, for example, he set up a charity called “Tripp-Charity” , with which he collects money for children with cancer . Through various campaigns, such as auctioning one of his jerseys during a Hamburg Freezers home game, Tripp, who had cancer himself, collected donations from supporters. He is also supported by Christian Ehrhoff , Dennis Seidenberg , Marcel Goc and Christoph Schubert . He donates the money raised to the “Fördergemeinschaft Kinderkrebs-Zentrum Hamburg e. V. "available. During his time in Cologne, donations in 2011 (19,000 euros) and 2012 (17,850 euros) went to the “Förderverein Kinderkrankenhaus Amsterdamer Straße Köln eV” and in 2013 the sum of 30,397.57 euros went to the “Förderverein für krebskranke Kinder e. V. Cologne ”.
Media activities
Since January 2016, Tripp has appeared temporarily as an expert in Center Ice, a broadcast about the Champions Hockey League (CHL), and as a commentator on CHL games. At the 2017 World Cup, he worked as a commentator for the Canadian broadcaster TSN .
