Christoph Schubert (born February 5, 1982 in Munich ) is a former German ice hockey player . He was on the ice in 70 games for the German national team and completed 377 games in the German Ice Hockey League. Schubert played a total of 315 NHL games, including for the Ottawa Senators and Atlanta Thrashers .
Career
Schubert began his career in the junior departments of the EHC Klostersee and after his junior years switched to the DNL team of the EV Landshut . In the 1999/2000 season as a 17-year-old he also made his senior debut in the league for this club . After the Landshut had just missed the leap into the 2nd Bundesliga , he moved to the following season in his hometown to the reigning German champions Munich Barons in the German ice hockey league . There he was part of the regular staff and developed into a robust defender with a hard slap shot in two seasons. In spring 2001 he was German runner-up with the team.
After the dissolution of the Barons at the end of the 2001/02 season , Schubert dared to move to North America. He signed a three-year contract with the Ottawa Senators , who had selected him in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round in 127th place. The Senators used him but with the Binghamton Senators , the farm team in the American Hockey League . Schubert spent the entire three years of his contract there, also due to the lockout in the National Hockey League in the 2004/05 season . During this time, Schubert played a total of 216 AHL games without any NHL involvement and was therefore toying with a return to Germany since his contract had expired. In summer 2005, Schubert signed a contract offer from Adler Mannheim . However, the signature became obsolete when the Ottawa Senators offered him a new contract, which he finally accepted in August 2005.
By successfully completing a training camp before the 2005/06 season , the defender was henceforth part of the permanent staff of the Ottawa Senators. In his first NHL season he came in 56 games to ten points. For much of the game year he was used in one of the defensive-oriented storm rows, as he could not prevail against the strong competition in the defensive position, but was still indispensable due to his defensive skills. In the 2006/07 season , Schubert continued to improve his game in the unfamiliar striker position and completed 80 games in the regular season . He also reached the final series for the Stanley Cup with the team , where the Senators were defeated by the Anaheim Ducks in the series after games with 1: 4. In July 2007, Ottawa extended his contract for another three years.
After he was sent by the Senators in the American Hockey League to the Binghamton Senators before the 2009/10 season , the Atlanta Thrashers signed him on October 2, 2009 from the waiver list. On September 15, 2010 he signed a three-month contract with Frölunda HC in the Swedish Elitserien . On December 8, 2010, Christoph Schubert decided to sign a contract with the Hamburg Freezers from the German Ice Hockey League until the end of the 2011/12 season . Until the end of the 2015/16 season, Schubert led the Freezers as captain. Subsequently, the owner of Freezers, the Anschutz Entertainment Group, announced that they would not apply for a license for the 2016/2017 season. Then Schubert initiated a funding and support campaign together with Olympic hockey champion Moritz Fürste and others. Although a large sum was raised within a few days, the Freezers owner stuck to his decision. Schubert then spoke of the "worst defeat of his career".
On June 29, 2016, Schubert announced on his official Facebook page that from the 2016/17 season he would play for the Crocodiles Hamburg in the major league and support the local office as an employee. In June 2019, due to injury, he announced the end of his playing career as well as his commitment to the Crocodiles and planned to pursue the coaching career.
International
Schubert was for the first time in a German selection at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2000 . This was followed by two further assignments in the junior division at the U20 Junior World Championships in 2001 and 2002 . For the senior national team , he made his international debut at the 2001 World Cup . Further nominations were made for the 2002 , 2005 , 2008 , 2009 and 2012 World Championships , the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey .
