The German Junior League is the name of the elite junior leagues of the German Ice Hockey Association . It was founded in 2000 by the DEB in cooperation with the national ice hockey associations. Its objective is to train and support young German players as well as to introduce them to the German professional leagues under the sporting direction of the German Ice Hockey Federation and the clubs involved.

Until 2010, the DNL included players up to the age of 17 years (U18). For the 2010/11 season, the age groups were frozen for the first time, and U19 teams played in the DNL. After the age group was frozen again, it is U20 teams. The DNL has existed for U20 and U17 teams in three or two divisions since 2018.

General

The DNL has existed since 2000 and in the 2016/17 season comprised the best youth teams born in 1998 to 2000, with up to three players born in 1997 having the right to play as "over-age" players. The German Junior League comprised teams from all over Germany. The DEB describes its junior league as "elite junior". In the meantime, the league was named USLB Junior League through a league and name sponsorship of the US Land Banking .

After its founding in 2000, the junior team of could SC Riessersee the first Championship win of the DNL. Then the young eagles Mannheim won the title of the German Junior League five times in a row until 2006 and were replaced by the Cologne EC after the 2006/07 season . The KEC defeated the young eagles Mannheim in the playoffs in 2007 and was the first time German junior champions. Before that, the Cologne team failed three times in the playoff finals from the Mannheim team from 2002 to 2004. The championships from the 2007/08 to 2009/10 seasons were again won by the Jungadler Mannheim. In the 2010/11 season, the EV Landshut junior team won the DNL championship for the first time after starting the play-offs from eighth place.

For the 2013/14 season, a second division in this age group, the DNL2, was introduced, which was divided into a north and south season.

For the 2016/17 season, the DNL was increased by four teams (Iserlohn, Dresden, Ingolstadt and Schwenningen) and the game was carried out in two performance groups. For the 2018/19 season, the game operations in the youth division were restructured again. U20 and U17 age groups were defined, which are played in two and three divisions, respectively.

The championships between 2012 and 2019 were won by the Jungadler Mannheim without interruption, making them record champions with 16 titles.

Regulations

Due to the progressive improvement of the rules in the league, the young players are introduced to professional sport. If a team does not meet the given requirements, it will not be allowed to play. Basically, all DNL teams are qualified for the next season.

A squad for a game in the DNL should consist of at least 15 field players and 2 goalkeepers who have been approved for play through the certification program . Falling below this requirement up to the minimum playing strength of 13 field players and one goalkeeper was possible in exceptional cases.

Historical regulations

Before the introduction of DNL2 2013/14, the teams qualified for the next season that took positions one to nine after the main round of a season, as well as the first place in the German youth championship. Should the sporting climber renounce his right of promotion, the relegated team was given the opportunity to continue to play in the DNL. This is what happened in May 2009, when the athletic relegated member, the Iserlohner EC, was retained by the DNL due to the fact that the EV Füssen did not move up.

A squad in the German junior league must consist of at least three goalkeepers and 22 field players born between 1993 and 1995. An exception can be granted for goalkeepers born in 1996. Furthermore, a maximum of two players requiring transfer cards may be registered. The coach of the youth team must have a 12-month employment contract with the club, which is available to the DEB. He must also exercise this office full-time. The clubs are obliged to subject the players to several performance tests and to submit the test results to the DEB. The performance tests consist of an athletic entry and exit test as well as an ice entry and exit test.
