The 2019/20 season is the 20th season since the establishment of the German Junior League , the highest junior league in German ice hockey . In the meantime, all U20 youth leagues of the German Ice Hockey Federation carry the designation "U20 DNL" with the addition of the corresponding division / game class.

For the U20 divisions, players born between 2000 and 2002 are normally entitled to play. In addition, a maximum of four players born in 2003 and an unlimited number of players born in 2003 with at least ten U18 international matches can be used.

The teams of Division I play in a 2.5-fold round to qualify for the playoffs (places 1–6). Those placed 7th and 8th at the end of the main round will play the "Relegation U20 I / II" with those placed 1 and 2 in Division II in a single round.

Three points are awarded to a team for a win after the normal playing time, if the game is a draw after 60 minutes, both teams receive one point, the winner of the five-minute extra time (only with three against three field players) or after a necessary penalty shootout receives another point credited. If a team loses in regular time, it does not receive any points.

Main round

The teams play a 2.5-fold round to qualify for the playoffs. In order to keep the costs for the clubs and the effort for the players under control, the games often take place as double game days on a weekend with the same opponent.

A special game was the game between Jungadler Mannheim and Junghaie Köln on December 6, 2019: The young eagles invited a number of schools to watch the game on St. Nicholas Day in the great hall of the SAP Arena. In addition, a larger supporting program was offered. As a result, the game had an official audience of 7907.

Playoffs

For the playoffs, the teams qualify in places 1–6 in the main round. The first and second placed are directly qualified for the quarter-finals, while the teams in places 3–6 determine the other quarter-finalists in the pre-playoffs.

In the playoffs, in the event of a tie after 60 minutes of play, a maximum of ten minutes extra time with 4 against 4 field players will be played first. If after that still no decision has been made, it will be made in the penalty shootout.

Live broadcasts

Several DNL teams have agreements with sports streaming services. As a rule, the home games of Jungadler Mannheim and Eisbären Juniors Berlin are streamed free of charge by Sportdeutschland.TV and the home games of Junghaie Köln and Düsseldorfer EG by Sporttotal .
