The Beit Tefillah Benjamin Synagogue in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi is one of two synagogues still active in the city . Before the Second World War, there were over 60 synagogues and prayer houses in Chernivtsi.

history

The synagogue was built in 1923. In 1938 (when Chernivtsi was part of Romania ), a memorial plaque was placed on the house that had a German text written in Hebrew script. Large parts of the Jews in Eastern Europe usually spoke Yiddish . This shows the close connection between German and Jewish culture in Chernivtsi.

From 1959 to 2012 the Beit Tefillah Benjamin Synagogue was the only active synagogue in Chernivtsi.

architecture

The relatively small building with a trapezoidal floor plan and maximum dimensions of 20.40 m (height), 15.32 m (width) and 10.25 m (length) is made of bricks in the neo-Moorish style . The main hall is two stories high; there is also a one-story extension in the north. The south side faces the street. Two arches contain three windows each, these also have round arches.

Inside, the women's gallery is on the first floor on the west and north sides; this is supported by four pillars.

The Bima is in the center of the main hall; the Torah shrine is in a niche in the east wall.

The impressive ceiling and wall paintings are particularly worth mentioning.
