The 2016/17 season was the 17th season since the establishment of the German Junior League , the highest junior league in German ice hockey . Since this season, the target strength of the league was for the first time 16 instead of twelve participants. Due to the withdrawal of the HSV Young Freezers , however, only 15 teams started, which is why no relegated team was determined this season.
Participant and mode
After a single-track main round with twelve participants had been played last year, the DEB announced that it would increase the league to 16 teams from this season and split it into two groups. The red and blue groups were filled according to their athletic performance in the previous season or due to a qualifying tournament played before the start of the season. After the Hamburg Freezers were no longer reported to play in the 2016/17 season in the DEL , the HSV Young Freezers team also dropped out of the DNL, which is why the blue group only started with seven teams.

Group red
Due to the performance in the 2015/16 season, the following qualified for the red group:
Via the qualification tournament before the start of the season, in which the teams placed in ranks 5 to 12 in the previous season participated, the following also qualified:

mode
A team was awarded three points for a win after normal playing time, if the game was tied after 60 minutes, both teams received one point, the winner of the five-minute extra time (only with four against four outfield players) or after a necessary penalty shoot-out received another point credited. If a team lost in regular time, they received no points.
First, in the main round within the two groups, a double round was played each against each other (28 or 24 games per team). After the conclusion of the main round in places 1 to 4, the teams in the Red group qualified for the quarter-finals of the playoffs. Those placed 5 to 8 in the red group and placed 1 to 4 in the blue group identified four further participants for the quarter-finals (best of three) in a playoff round. The winners of the quarter-finals took part in the final tournament for the German championship. For the teams that finished 5th to 7th in the blue group after the main round, the season was over.
