Matthias of Arras
Matthias von Arras ( Czech Matyáš z Arrasu ; * 1290 in Arras , France , † 1352 in Prague ) was a French architect and builder who worked in Bohemia .
Life
Matthias von Arras, representative of late Gothic French architecture and architect at the papal court in Avignon , was summoned to Prague by King John of Luxembourg in 1344 on the recommendation of the Moravian margrave and later emperor Charles IV to build St. Vitus Cathedral based on the model of the cathedrals in Take over Narbonne and Rodez .
The foundation stone was laid on November 21, 1344 and during the eight years of construction, until his death, he had the end of the choir with the arcades, the walkway and five chapels and the entire eastern part of the long choir built.
In 1348 he began to build Karlstein Castle for Charles IV .
His successor as the builder of St. Vitus Cathedral was Peter Parler .
