Philip Gogulla (born July 31, 1987 in Düsseldorf ) is a German ice hockey player who has been playing for EHC Red Bull Munich in the German ice hockey league since the 2019/20 season . His younger brother Patrik is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Philip Gogulla began his professional career with the Krefeld Pinguinen , where he was already part of the KEV team in the German Junior League at the age of 15 . From 2002 to 2004 the winger impressed with excellent technique and a good scoring rate, after which he was signed by the Kölner Haie for the 2004/05 season . Originally, Gogulla was supposed to be part of the DNL team or with funding license partner Moskitos Essen , but played a large part of the season for the DEL team due to the injury problems at the KEC. In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft , the attacker was selected in 48th place by the Buffalo Sabers .
In the 2005/06 season , the left-shooter played the entire season for the Haie DEL team, scored 26 points and reached the semi-finals of the play-offs with the KEC. Although Gogulla's contract in Cologne ran until 2009, the Sabers signed him for three years in the summer of 2007, but both clubs agreed that the attacker should first fulfill his contract in Cologne. In the 2007/08 season he reached the final with his team, but lost to the Eisbären Berlin in four games of the best-of-five series .
In the summer of 2009, after his contract with the sharks had expired, he finally moved to North America in the National Hockey League for the Buffalo Sabers. However, he did not make it into the Sabers NHL squad and played in the American Hockey League with the Portland Pirates before returning to the Cologne Sharks in June 2010, where he signed a contract until 2013, which was later extended. In the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons he was again runner- up under the former national coach Uwe Krupp . In the 2015/16 season he formed the Haie's most successful storm duo with Patrick Hager . In the following season 2016/17 he was again the Haie player with the highest points in the main round and behind Ryan Jones with 17 goals the second best scorer of his team.
Gogulla is the player with the most goals (183), the third most assists (306), the third most games (740) and the second most scorer points (489) of the Kölner Haie since its existence in the DEL.
In March 2018, Gogulla's contract with the Kölner Haien, which ran until 2019, was terminated. For the 2018/19 season, Gogulla moved to league rivals Düsseldorfer EG, where he initially signed a contract for one year. At DEG he played the best preliminary round of his career with 26 goals and 52 points and was then named striker of the year. For the following season he moved to EHC Red Bull Munich because, according to his own statements, he saw a greater chance of winning the DEL championship with this club.
Remarkable
On March 22, 2008, Gogulla decided the longest game in German ice hockey history and at that time also the longest game in all of European history: It was the third quarter-final game against Adler Mannheim , which in the sixth overtime after 168: 12 minutes of play with a fifth goal of the Sharks has been stopped. Almost three years later Gogulla also decided the third longest game on German soil on March 16, 2011 with a goal against EHC Munich in the first round after 110: 00 minutes of play. The Haie won the game away 4-3.
International
Gogulla made his first appearance for a selection of the German Ice Hockey Federation at the U18 World Cup in 2004 , where he was one of the best players and played a major role in the rise of the national team. The attacker received further tournament appearances at the U18 World Cup in 2005 and at the U20 World Cup in 2006 , where he was again one of the best players in the tournament and achieved immediate promotion with the U20 selection . Furthermore, Gogulla was part of the expanded squad of the senior team for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, but was canceled shortly before the tournament. At the Division I World Championship in Amiens in the same year , however, he was part of the squad and managed direct promotion with the national team. At the 2010 World Cup in Germany, he scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 victory over Switzerland, which made the German national team advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.
On July 21, 2017, Gogulla announced his retirement from the national team after 157 international matches and 104 scorer points . In his last World Cup participation in 2017 , which took place in the venue of his club Kölner Haie , he was used in the first 5 games and was able to score one goal each against Sweden and Russia . After Leon Draisaitl was nominated for the last 3 World Cup games, he was no longer part of the squad.
