Donald Clinton Jackson (born September 2, 1956 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey coach and former National Hockey League player. Since May 2014 he has been the head coach of EHC Red Bull Munich . With eight German championships he is the most successful head coach in DEL history, the only coach in German ice hockey history who has managed the title hat trick with two different clubs, the only coach who has reached the final of the Champions Hockey League with a German team , became DEL Trainer of the Year 2019 and holds several records in the DEL. He also won the German Ice Hockey Cup twice and finished the main round seven times as first in the table.

Career in North America

Jackson began his playing career in the NCAA with the team of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish .

He was later committed as a young talent by the NHL team Minnesota North Stars in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft in the third round at position 39, but only made eight appearances in the following season. His final breakthrough came in the early 1980s with the Edmonton Oilers . For this team he played between 1982 and 1986 and won the Stanley Cup twice on the side of "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky . He ended his active career with the New York Rangers . He scored 77 scorer points in his total of 368 NHL appearances as a defender .

Then he was mostly active as an assistant coach in various NHL teams, the longest from 2001 to 2005 with the Ottawa Senators . At the Pittsburgh Penguins he coached the Czech ice hockey legend Jaromír Jágr , the most successful European player in NHL history.

Coaching career in German-speaking countries

Beginning with the Eisbären Berlin

The 2004/2005 NHL season was completely canceled due to the lockout and Jackson switched to the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) during the season . There he trained as an assistant coach at the main round runner-up and later champion Eisbären Berlin, in particular the defensive players. In Berlin he also met his former companion Pierre Pagé - the two of them had trained together for the Québec Nordiques NHL team in the 1990s .

DEG Metro Stars

After the successful time in Berlin, Jackson switched to the eight-time German champions from Düsseldorf, the DEG Metro Stars , in the 2005/06 season . He led them from third place in the main round to the final of the DEL play-offs , in which they were defeated by the defending champion - and Don Jackson's former employer - Eisbären Berlin. In addition to the runner-up, Jackson's team reached the final of the German Ice Hockey Cup and beat Adler Mannheim there . After this greatest success of the Metro Stars since the 1996 championship , Jackson also looked after the Metro Stars in the 2006/2007 season , finished second after the main round and was eliminated in the subsequent playoffs in the semi-finals.

Return to the polar bears Berlin

For the 2007/08 season he returned to the polar bears as head coach and signed a two-year contract there. In the 2007/2008 DEL season, he won both the cup and the championship title with the Eisbären Berlin. In 2009 , 2011 , 2012 and 2013 he was again German champion with the Eisbären Berlin after the Eisbären had finished the main round in 2008 as second, in 2009 as first, 2011 as third, 2012 as first and 2013 as fourth. In 2009/10 he was able to set a DEL record with 123 points, but retired as the reigning defending champion after five games in the best-of-five series in the quarter-finals against the Augsburg Panthers . In 2010 he also won the European Trophy by winning the HV71 Jönköping in the final .

One year at EC Red Bull Salzburg

In the 2013/2014 season he worked as a coach at EC Red Bull Salzburg , finished the main round in 2013/14 as third in the table, won the placement round and led the team to the playoff final of the Austrian Ice Hockey League (EBEL), the EC in five games of the best-of-five series against HC Bozen , a foreign member of the league, lost. Jackson was Austrian champion , however , as Salzburg became the best-placed Austrian team.

EHC Red Bull Munich

In May 2014 he moved within Red Bull GmbH to the Munich DEL club EHC Red Bull Munich and reached second place after the main round, but was already eliminated in the quarter-finals of the best-of-seven series against Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg with 0: 4 wins out. In the 2015/16 season , the EHC became German champions under Jackson's leadership and repeated the triumph in 2017 and 2018 after the EHC had finished the main round as first in the table.

In the following season , the EHC reached the final of the Champions Hockey League under Jackson's leadership, which was lost 3-1 to the Frölunda Indians . The Red Bulls finished second in the 2018/19 DEL main round like 2014/15 and Jackson was named DEL Trainer of the Year for the first time . In the subsequent playoffs, the Munich team lost the final series against Adler Mannheim , while Jackson surpassed former national coach Hans Zach in the first final game with his 839th DEL game as coach and thus holds the DEL record. The main round of the following season , Munich again finished first in the table.

Others

As head coach in the DEL, Jackson has a win rate of 65.2 percent and has won 550 of his 843 games so far (as of August 2019). He is considered a coach who is particularly characterized by his leadership and tactical analysis, who can improve his players individually. Deron Quint said of him: “Don Jackson is the best coach I've ever worked under. He always makes you feel good, he takes you seriously as a person, not just as a professional. "

Quote

“Ice hockey is an art and a science. It's a creative game and there isn't one perfect answer to everything. "

Trivia

Jackson has often attracted attention for unconventional methods to lead his team to success. On April 9, 2006, his DEG was 2: 3 against Kölner Haie in the fifth and decisive semi-final eight minutes before the end at Brehmstrasse , when his team was awarded a double majority. Jackson took his goalkeeper Andrei Trefilow out of the gate in favor of a sixth outfield player at this early stage , his team took advantage of this six versus three situation and scored the equalizer. His team finally won 5-3 and advanced to the final. The then manager of DEG, Lance Nethery , expressed his admiration for this courageous behavior in a rustic way: “Don has big balls” . In the second final game, the last game on Brehmstrasse, the Düsseldorf fans paid homage with a banner: “Only one person has eggs. Don Jackson and nobody else. "
