Christopher "Chris" Bourque (born January 29, 1986 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with EHC Red Bull Munich in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) since May 2019 . Chris is the son of Hall of Fame member Ray Bourque . His brother Ryan is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
The 1.73 m tall winger began his career on the Boston University team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations before being selected ( drafted ) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft as 33rd in the second round by the Washington Capitals . From the capital city, the left shooter was first used with the Portland Pirates and the Hershey Bears in the AHL, in November 2007 he was then appointed to the NHL squad of the Capitals for the first time. In total, he completed four games this season for the capital city, who sent him back to the Bears in the AHL at the beginning of the following season . He scored his first NHL goal on December 30, 2008 against the Buffalo Sabers , but only played eight games for the Capitals.
The 2009/10 season he began with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who had signed him in September 2009 via the waiver . In December of the same year, the Penguins also put him on the waiver list, from which the Capitals signed him and subsequently used him again with the hershey Bears.
After the season ended, Bourque signed a two-year contract with Atlant Mytishchi from the Continental Hockey League . After eight games for Atlant, he left the KHL in early October 2010 and was signed by HC Lugano .
On July 2, 2011, Bourque signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals. However, the striker spent the entire 2011/12 season with their AHL farm team, Hershey Bears, and with 93 points in the regular season became the most successful points collector of the season. On May 26, 2012, the Washington Capitals transferred him to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Zach Hamill . During the following season he was used for both the Providence Bruins in the AHL, and the Boston Bruins in the NHL. During the 2013 NHL play-offs, Bourque was signed by Ak Bars Kazan for the following season. In November 2013 he left Kazan again and moved to Switzerland to EHC Biel , where he spent the rest of the season. In July 2014 he was hired as a free agent by the New York Rangers , where he meets his brother Ryan. As part of the preparation for the 2014/15 season, the Rangers gave him to their AHL farm team Hartford Wolf Pack .
After a year in Hartford, in which he came to no NHL use, he signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals , which use him with the Hershey Bears in the AHL. There he was able to build on earlier performances in Hershey and with 30 goals and 50 assists became the top scorer of the league for the second time, so that he was awarded the John B. Sollenberger Trophy . He was also named the most valuable player of the regular season with the Les Cunningham Award and - as in the previous year - he was elected to the AHL First All-Star Team .
After the 2016/17 season, Bourque signed a new, all-AHL-only, one-year contract in Hershey. After three years in Hershey, he finally moved to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers within the league for the 2018/19 season . In spring 2019, he did not receive a new contract there and then moved to EHC Red Bull Munich in May 2019 . The season in Munich was extremely successful for Bourque, because the Red Bulls finished the main round in first place and he scored 47 times (17 goals) in 51 main round games and also led the plus / minus statistics with a value of +26. However, the 2020 playoffs were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and no German champions were determined.
International
Bourque has been playing internationally since his youth for his country of birth and not for his father's Canadian homeland. With the U20 national team of the USA he took part in the U20 World Championships in 2005 and 2006 and finished fourth in each case. He made his debut for the senior national team in the 2013 Deutschland Cup before joining Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics . There, the team that competed without NHL players reached seventh place.
