The ice rink on Brehmstrasse in the Düsseldorf district of Düsseltal was the home ground of the DEL Club Düsseldorfer EG (2001–2012 DEG Metro Stars ) from 1935 to 2006 and is considered to be the most traditional of the German ice rinks . The stadium is located on the busy north-south axis Brehmstrasse, right next to the Zoopark , where the Düsseldorf Zoological Garden was located from 1876 to 1943 . Today the stadium is, among other things, the training facility of the Düsseldorfer EG and home ground for the youth and amateur teams as well as the covered alternative accommodation for the tennis team world championship, the World Team Cup , which was held for the last time in 2012.

history

On November 23, 1935, after Berlin and Munich, Germany's third ice rink opened. The uncovered stadium was built under the direction of the architect Peter Dierichsweiler in the building department of the city of Düsseldorf and with financial support from the Düsseldorf steel industrialist and sports patron Ernst Poensgen . The original stadium, which after completion had space for 8,000 spectators, was completely bombed in World War II . The then coach Bobby Bell was also killed.

After it was rebuilt in 1946, the stadium held 10,500 spectators, making it the largest ice rink in Germany for decades. In 1969 the stadium was roofed with a steel construction by the architect Friedrich Tamms on four supports . At the same time, a standing room was built on the north side.

It served as a World Cup location at the ice hockey world championships in 1955 , 1975 and 1983 . The Soviet national coach Anatoly Tarassow is said to have spoken of the “best fans in the world” at a game with his team on Brehmstrasse in September 1971. DEG also celebrated its eight German championships here . The first championship title in 1967 was celebrated with fireworks that were fired in the stadium. After 1969 this was no longer possible because of the roof.

After adding seating stands between the standing areas and the roof in the early 1990s and converting a standing area into seating at the end of the decade, the ice rink on Brehmstrasse now holds 10,285 spectators, 6,922 of which are standing, after the audience capacity had briefly increased to 11,117 . "The Brehmstrasse", as the stadium is called for short, was the most popular ice rink in Germany during the successful times of the Düsseldorfer EG. In the years 1986 to 1996 almost every home game was sold out. Often more than 9,500 DEG season season tickets were sold.

Second ice surface

Between 1955 and 1995 there was an additional, uncovered ice rink next to the ice rink for training purposes. However, this had to be closed due to massive defects and progressive deterioration and was then used as a parking lot for the players. A lack of financial means prevented a renovation or a new building in the near future. It was not until 2004, after long discussions, that a new, now roofed, modern ice rink was built at the same location, so that Brehmstrasse again has two functioning ice rinks and Düsseldorf has an acceptable platform for youth work in the field of young ice hockey players.

outlook

Despite the size of the old ice rink, during the summer break of 2006 it was replaced as the home ground of the DEG DEL team by the 13,400-seat ISS Dome , which is located in the northern district of Rath . However, Brehmstraße remains the training location for the professional team and the venue for all junior teams , including the DNL team.

The reason for the abandonment as a venue for the DEL team was mainly the fact that the now 70-year-old stadium, in terms of comfort, catering, sanitary facilities and offers for the VIP spectator segment, compared to other DEL locations where to At that time, more and more old ice rinks were replaced by new multifunctional arenas, was no longer competitive. In addition, the stadium no longer met the current audience demands. Another problem is that the stadium is located in the middle of an inner city residential area with a correspondingly tense parking lot situation.

The planning of the ISS Dome created a conflict for many fans, as Brehmstrasse was a cult site of German ice hockey, which for decades had been characterized by an uncomfortable but very impressive atmosphere.

farewell

On September 3, 2006, the association organized a celebratory farewell to the ice rink on Brehmstrasse in cooperation with the various fan groups and clubs. In the morning, a fan march with over 5,000 participants and ice hockey fans from all over Germany started from the ice rink, to pull together with bands, carnival floats, sponsors and former and current players to the ISS Dome in Rath, which is about five kilometers away as the crow flies . The move was also accompanied by an ice resurfacing machine and a delegation from arch rival Kölner Haie . Many Düsseldorf citizens lined the streets of the train route.
