The Calgary Cowboys were an ice hockey team from Calgary , Alberta that was active in the North American World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1975 to 1977 . The franchise was originally founded as Miami Screaming Eagles in 1972 , but never played there. After a year in Philadelphia , the team moved to Vancouver in 1973 and played there as the Vancouver Blazers for two years .
history
After the crowd in Vancouver had dropped to 8,000, the owner Jim Pattison decided to relocate the team to Calgary for the 1975/76 season . The new name for the team that played in the Calgary Corral was Calgary Cowboys, based on the annual rodeo show. The stadium only had 8,700 seats.
In the first year the Cowboys, led by top scorer Danny Lawson , who had been with the team since the time in Philadelphia, reached the playoffs and even made it into the second round. However, the number of viewers stayed just under 5,000. The 1976/77 season turned out to be a big disappointment. At home the cowboys were strong, but they hardly managed to convince in foreign stadiums. The weakest team of the season, the Phoenix Roadrunners , won all three games of the remaining games in foreign stadiums, but only two more were won. At the end of the season, Danny Lawson was also given up. Only four points were missing to participate in the playoff but the future was massively endangered. A move to Ottawa, where two previous teams had failed, the league declined. Now they set a brand for season tickets that they wanted to reach in order to continue playing. When this was not achieved by the end of May 1977, the team was disbanded.
