The Michigan Stags were an ice hockey team from Detroit , Michigan that was active in the North American World Hockey Association (WHA) from the summer of 1974 through January 1975 . The franchise was terminated on January 18th for financial reasons. Five days later, the league decided that the team should continue playing as Baltimore Blades in the state of Maryland until the end of the season .

history

Shortly before the end of the 1973/74 season , the Detroit-based Charles Nolton and John Shagena bought the Los Angeles Sharks , which had been stumbling in sport . The team was relocated to Detroit and played there as Michigan Stags.

The Cobo Arena served as the stadium , with a capacity of 10,200 seats. The team lacked potential and when the star, Marc Tardif , was handed over to Quebec Nordiques early in the season , the sporting situation was even worse than before. A large number of under contract players had been brought with them from Los Angeles, creating a tight financial situation. With the limited funds, the owners were unable to market the team in Detroit accordingly, and so bills that remained unpaid piled up. On January 18, the stages, which could hardly attract more than 2,000 spectators for their home games due to poor sporting performance, were dissolved. A few days later, the Houston Eros would have made a guest appearance in Detroit and the former superstar of the Detroit Red Wings , Gordie Howe , would have come back to his old home. After a week of uncertainty, the WHA decided to install a new team in the league with the Baltimore Blades , which should end the season for the Stags.
