Korbinian Holzer (born February 16, 1988 in Munich ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays there in the position of defender .
Career
Korbinian Holzer took his first steps on the ice at TuS Geretsried . In the 2004/05 season Holzer ran for the first time in the German junior league for the EC Bad Tölz . In the following year, the 1.90 m tall defender was appointed regular player in the Tölzer second division team due to his good performance . Even at EV Regensburg , for which he played since the 2006/07 season, the right-handed shooter was able to enter the scorer list several times until the middle of the season.
In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , Holzer was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fourth round at position 111, but did not move to North America, but signed a contract until 2009 with the DEG Metro Stars from Düsseldorf in spring 2007 . For the 2010/11 season Holzer finally moved to North America, played there at the beginning of the season with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL and made his debut on November 6, 2010 as the first German in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs at their home game against the Buffalo Sabers in the NHL. On February 5, 2013, Holzer scored his first goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals .
After five years in Toronto, he left the Maple Leafs in March 2015 and was given to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Eric Brewer and a five-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . After the move, Holzer did not make his debut for Anaheim during the season. He didn't appear for the team for the first time until the 2015/16 season , where he was able to establish himself in the extended squad over the next three years, but not earn a permanent place. Nevertheless, the Ducks extended the contract by two years in the summer of 2017.
Holzer was also active in Anaheim for a total of five years before he was transferred to the Nashville Predators for the trade deadline in February 2020 . In return, they sent Matt Irwin and a six- round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2022 to the Ducks.
International
Holzer ran for the first time for a junior selection of the German Ice Hockey Federation at the U18 World Cup in 2005 in the Czech Republic . He was also used at the U18 World Cup in Sweden in 2006 and the U20 World Cup in 2007 . After relegation in 2007, he played with the German U20 team at the 2008 World Cup in Division I, where he was immediately promoted back to the top division.
In the men's area, he was used at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , the 2010 World Championships in Germany, 2011 and the 2016 World Cup in the German national team . He also represented Germany in the Olympic qualification for the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang and the 2018 and 2019 World Championships .
