John Hynes (born February 10, 1975 in Warwick , Rhode Island ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach . Since January 2020 he has been the head coach of the Nashville Predators in the NHL , after having already looked after the New Jersey Devils in the same role from 2015 to 2019 .

Career

John Hynes studied at Boston University and went with moderate success from 1994 to 1997 for their ice hockey team in the Hockey East , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , on the ice. Instead of following a professional career, Hynes was appointed assistant coach of the team in the 1996/97 season. In this position he stayed until 1998, before Hynes took over the post of head coach at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League for the following two seasons . In the 2001/02 season he coached the University of Massachusetts Lowell ice hockey team as an assistant coach . In the following years he was particularly committed to promoting youth in the United States.

Except for a short-term engagement as head coach for the Wisconsin Badgers, the ice hockey team of the University of Wisconsin – Madison , he worked for the US Association until 2009 and trained their ice hockey team in the USHL. Hynes also served his home country at various junior world championships when he led the U18 and U20 national teams to six World Cup tournaments, three of which as head coach. Under his leadership, the U18 won the gold medal at the 2006 World Cup. He repeated the same thing with the U20 national team two years later. For the 2009/10 season Hynes was hired as an assistant coach by the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League . In July 2010, he was introduced as the franchise's head coach after Todd Reirden migrated to the Pittsburgh Penguins to work as an assistant coach.

Former player Alain Nasreddine was Hynes' assistant . The team got off to a successful start in the 2010/11 season , so Hynes was nominated as head coach for the AHL All-Star Classic , because the Penguins were in first place in the league in mid-January 2011 and led the Eastern Conference . He headed the Western Conference All-Stars team .

After six seasons as head coach of the Penguins, Hynes was hired as the new head coach of the New Jersey Devils in June 2015 , succeeding the duo Adam Oates and Scott Stevens . At the age of 40, he was the youngest of all 30 head coaches in the NHL at the time. The assistants there are Geoff Ward and, as has been the case with the Penguins for five years, Alain Nasreddine . After his first season with the Devils, he took part in the 2016 World Cup as head coach of Team USA and led the team to fourth place there. In September 2016 he was the assistant coach of Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 behind the gang, but was eliminated with the team in the group stage.

After more than four years in New Jersey, in which the Devils only reached the playoffs once, and another weak start to the 2019/20 season, Hynes was fired in December 2019 and replaced by his previous assistant Alain Nasreddine . In the following month he was signed by the Nashville Predators after the dismissal of long-time coach Peter Laviolette .
