Alain Nasreddine (born July 10, 1975 in Montréal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach . From December 2019 to July 2020, he served as the head coach of the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League and continues to work for the team.
Career
Nasreddine began his career in 1991 with the Voltigeurs de Drummondville in the Canadian Junior League QMJHL . The then only 16 year old quickly demonstrated his talent and was able to improve continuously compared to his first season. In his second season, the defender had 14 scorer points in 64 games.
In 1993, Nasreddine was selected by the Florida Panthers in the NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round in a total of 135th place. However, Nasreddine did not change immediately to the AHL or NHL , but within the QMJHL to the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi . There the defender stayed two more seasons and then joined the Carolina Monarchs from the American Hockey League, in which, however, he was able to record only five scorer points in 63 games.
In the following six years Nasreddine changed clubs several times and signed a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks for the 1998/99 season , in which, however, he only played seven games and which he left during the season in his home country for the Montréal Canadiens . Four years later, and after repeated club changes and three games for the New York Islanders , Nasreddine joined the Pittsburgh Penguins through an exchange deal with Steve Webb . However, the left-handed shooter was mainly used on their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . Nevertheless, he brought it to a total of 50 NHL games, in which the Canadian was able to achieve five scorer points.
After a renewed engagement in the top North American division had become unlikely due to his age, Nasreddine was drawn to the German Ice Hockey League for the Nuremberg Ice Tigers in the 2008/09 season , where he played until 2010. He then accepted an offer from Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins to work there as an assistant coach under John Hynes . After five seasons with the Penguins, he moved to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL in June 2015 together with Hynes, who became head coach . At the Devils, he took over the role of head coach on an interim basis in December 2019 after Hynes was fired. By the end of the season he played 43 games in this position before handing over the position to Lindy Ruff in July 2020 and remaining on the Devils coaching staff.
