Juuse Saros (born April 19, 1995 in Forssa ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League since June 2015 .

Career

Juuse Saros began his career in 2009 in the youth division of Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho and went through all of the club's youth teams. In 2011 he achieved the best catch quota in the C-Juniors SM-sarja, the third highest division of this age group and was also voted the best goalkeeper and best player in the league and consequently also in the All-Star team. In 2012, with the best catch quota in the playoffs, he made a significant contribution to the fact that the A-Juniors of his club took third place in the SM-liiga, the highest Finnish division. In addition, in qualifying for the SM-sarja of the B-Juniors, he achieved both the best catch quota and the lowest goals against goals per game. The following year he was Finnish A-Juniors champion with Hämeenlinna Pallokerho. He himself achieved the best catch quota and the lowest average against goals in the SM-liiga of this age group and was therefore also voted best player and best goalkeeper as well as in the First All-Star team.

In the 2013 NHL Entry Draft , Saros was drawn by Nashville Predators in the fourth round as the 99th player. However, he stayed in Hämeenlinna for two more years and became a regular goalkeeper there. In his first season he achieved the second-best catch quota and the second lowest goal against goal in the Liiga behind Jussi Rynnäs from master Oulun Kärpät and was awarded the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy as Rookie of the Year . After he was selected in the first round in 19th position in the KHL Junior Draft by the Belarusian HK Dinamo Minsk in the first round, he moved to his NHL draft club in Nashville. He made his debut on November 28, 2015 in the 1: 4 loss to the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League and was otherwise mainly used in the Predators' farm team, the Milwaukee Admirals , in the American Hockey League . At the end of the 2015/16 season he was elected to the all-rookie team there.

In the 2016/17 season, Saros received significantly more playing time in the NHL with 21 appearances, acted as second goalkeeper behind Pekka Rinne and reached the Stanley Cup final with the Predators, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins there . The following season the Finn was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team and established himself as the second goalkeeper behind Rinne in the Predators' NHL squad for the 2018/19 season. In the following 2019/20 season, he played 40 more appearances than Rinne (36) and was also preferred to his compatriot in the 2020 playoffs .

International

Juuse Saros represented his home country at the U18 World Championships in 2012 , but when he was not used, and in 2013 when he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament with the second best catch rate and the second lowest goals against goals (behind the Canadian Philippe Desrosiers ) and with his performance contributed significantly to winning the bronze medal. In 2014 and 2015 he took part in the U20 World Championships. He was elected world champion with the Finnish junior selection 2014 and even with the best catch quota and the lowest goals against goals per game, he was also elected to the all-star team of the tournament.

During the 2013/14 season he made his debut for the men's national team and was nominated for the 2014 World Cup , in which he was not used, but won the silver medal with his team. The following year he made his first World Cup appearance in the men's area when he managed a shutout in the 3-0 preliminary round win against Slovakia . He also represented his colors in three games of the Euro Hockey Tour 2014/15 , which Finland finished second behind Sweden . Saros was also part of the Finnish squad at the 2016 World Cup and won the silver medal with the team again.
